Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the launch of my new friend Portia J. Alight | the brand latest collection of scarves and beautiful bags!

Portia is an uber talented Toronto artist and designer who creates beautiful silk scarves with her drawings on them and gorgeous leather bags. We met just a couple of weeks ago at a fashion tech conference (thank you COUTH STUDIOS!) and I was so happy she invited me to celebrate her latest collection.

From the teal, navy and red dress code to the beautiful way she curated the evening, everything felt so thoughtful. It was such a lovely opportunity to connect with other creatives, celebrate a fellow designer and leave feeling inspired.

Toronto has so many talented artists and designers doing incredible things, and I love getting opportunities like this to discover and celebrate their work. Ms. Sheryl Lee Ralph is someone I will always stop and listen to when I come across one of her interviews. She’s constantly dropping hard truths, reminding us of our worth and challenging us to show up fully and unapologetically as ourselves. And this clip really resonated with me.

Fashion has been one of the ways I’ve learned to do that for myself. It’s helped me express more of who I am, push past some of the expectations I had of myself and feel more confident taking up space. And that’s a big part of what I want ILA to be for other people too by designing pieces that help you feel a little bolder, more confident and more like yourself when you put it on.

So the next time someone tells you you’re “too much,” just remember that you have a community here that wants you to take up space, show up as your whole self and never feel like you need to be less for anyone. 💜
