Growing up in Kingston, everyone had their own The Tragically Hip story. I remember walking by Rob’s home downtown and seeing him strumming his guitar on the porch.
The Hip were part of the fabric of Kingston, and they’ve had a lasting influence on myself, and Province of Canada.
I’ll never forget watching SNL in 1995, when Dan Aykroyd introduced the band wearing a Canada T-shirt and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, from Kingston, Ontario, Canada, home of Kirk Muller, Walter Frank High, and me. It is my honour to introduce to America, my friends, The Tragically Hip.” To 13 year-old me, that moment felt like a signal that Canadians could do great things - and do them without apologizing.
This collection brings a few threads from those years together. The friend who first introduced me to The Hip is also the friend who got me into playing football. Now, all these years later, we’re honoured to play a small part in bringing The Hip and the CFL together to mark the 10th anniversary of their final concert.
It feels like a “fully completely,” made in Canada moment.
