Unfortunately, wildfire season is upon us again - and with that often comes irritated eyes. Below are some tips to help your eyes stay comfortable in the smokey conditions we are dealing with in the Kootenay's right now:

1. Limit Exposure: This one might be obvious - but if you can - stay indoors! Check your local air quality index (AQI) and limit your time outdoors when the AQI is in the "unhealthy" range.

2. Use Artificial Tears: Over-the-counter lubricating drops can help wash out smoke particles and soothe irritation. Preservative free drops are best!

3. Wear Protective Eyewear: Sunglasses or wrap-around glasses create a physical barrier against smoke and ash particles.

4. Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes: Rubbing your eyes can push particles deeper into the eye or damage the corneal surface. Instead, rinse with artificial tears or a sterile saline solution.

5. Practice Good Eye Hygiene: Wash your hands before touching your eye area and use a clean washcloth if you need to clean your eyelids.
