Furthermore, please note that by choice, we use only oil-based polyurethane versus any other finish. In the furniture industry, however, lacquer is more commonly used. It is sprayed on and takes minutes to dry. However, whereas lacquer stays on the surface of the wood, oil-based polyurethane penetrates into the pores of the wood, simultaneously protecting and highlighting natural wood grain. But, polyurethane is time-consuming. It requires overnight drying and curing, per layer, and we always apply multiple layers, sanding in between each. As for durability, though, polyurethane surpasses lacquer. It is less likely to leave heat marks, scuffs, and scratches; plus, it provides UV protection, and doesn’t chip or flake off. Granted, no furniture finish is indestructible, but we prefer oil-based polyurethane in order to produce maintenance-free pieces that look naturally beautiful and last long in their refined presentation.
