BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAM EXPANDS TO YUKON

Starting July 1, 2025, Call2Recycle launched its Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! Program in Yukon — making it the first Canadian territory with an official Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) battery recycling program.

✅ What this means:
Yukoners now have access to safe and convenient drop-off locations at retail stores, municipal buildings, schools, and more. This initiative helps protect the environment while supporting Yukon’s goals for a greener, circular economy.

🌱 With nearly 15,000 collection sites across Canada, Call2Recycle is making battery recycling easier than ever — from big cities to remote communities.

ZERO WASTE TOWN

🌿 Tucked in the mountains of Shikoku, Kamikatsu is a tiny town making a huge impact. Since 2003, they’ve committed to becoming completely zero-waste — no landfills, no incinerators.

♻️ With a population of approximately 1,400, Kamikatsu has implemented a meticulous waste management system where residents separate their waste into 45 distinct categories. This detailed sorting process includes categories such as nine types of paper products, various plastics, metals, and glass, all of which must be cleaned and sorted accordingly. Items like plastic bottles require the removal of caps and labels before recycling .

🏠 Due to the town's dispersed layout across mountainous terrain, traditional waste collection methods were deemed inefficient. Instead, residents transport their sorted waste to the centrally located Kamikatsu Zero Waste Center, affectionately known as "WHY." This facility not only serves as a recycling hub but also houses a reuse shop called the "Kuru Kuru Shop," where residents can drop off unwanted items for others to take freely.

🌍 By recycling over 80% of its waste, the town has reduced its reliance on costly incineration processes.

🍻 Kamikatsu's approach has transformed waste management into a community-driven, educational endeavor. The Zero Waste Center hosts workshops and tours, educating visitors and residents alike on sustainable practices. The town's model has inspired other municipalities and organizations worldwide to reconsider their waste management strategies.

UNFORTUNATELY...

Canada’s landfills are a major source of methane emissions, accounting for nearly 25% of the country’s total methane pollution. Methane is a greenhouse gas over 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide in trapping heat in the atmosphere.

As organic waste like food scraps and yard waste decomposes without oxygen in landfills, it releases methane into the air, contributing significantly to climate change.

This fact highlights the importance of diverting organic waste from landfills through composting and other sustainable waste management practices to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment.

✨RUNNING THE NUMBERS BY CHRIS JORDAN

Chris Jordan’s Running the Numbers is a powerful photo series that transforms overwhelming statistics into striking visual art. Through his work, Jordan makes abstract data — from plastic waste to mass consumption — painfully real and impossible to ignore.

Each image tells a story of our collective impact on the planet, using thousands of small details to reveal the scale of environmental and social issues. It’s a reminder that behind every number are real choices, consequences, and the urgent need for change.
