Devil May Wear

Devil May Wear Lingerie inspired clothing, underwear and accessories made in Vancouver. Devil May Wear
Creating beautifully made local clothing for everyday ease since 2003.

With the drive to create well-fitting underwear Stephanie Ostler founded Devil May Wear in 2003. Her handmade underwear was a hit, known for its soft fabric and great cut. That first bikini cut pattern brought her company from a small home base business to an extensive award winning wholesale and retail experience. Devil May Wear continues today to create beautiful handmade basics from soft to the

touch natural fibres, playful seasonal collections and inmates that make you forget you have put them on. All of which can be found online at devilmaywear.ca or in DMW’s location: Granville Island’s Net Loft building. Ostler’s dedication to locally made and sustainable products translates into her company seamlessly: Devil May Wear’s products have been cut and sewn in the Devil May Wear Studio in Vancouver B.C since the beginning. Using, mostly, natural, sustainable and eco-friendly fibres, the DMW team strives to waste less where possible. Ostler also plans on keeping the company base in Vancouver. On top of creating locally made clothing for her city, she wants to be a part of job creation in her city. A Long Overdue Letter: Devil May Wear. Today I sent out the first mailout from Devil May Wear in, I think 3 years... can that be true? There has been a lot of changes in my life since 2022 when we closed the last of our stores at the tail end of Covid. If you've tried to connect, been on our website or socials recently you've probably wondered what in the world is going on! Well I got my masters from ECUAD, started teaching double time and had a baby!

Traditionally known as a 'naatsit', the seal fur thong is adorned with beads and would have been sewn together by a woman, for a woman.

According to Peter Toft, the National Museum of Denmark’s Greenlandic fur clothing expert, this beaded, furry thong was intended to be displayed not just during intimate moments, but in polite company. Inside the warm homes of the Greenlandic Inuit, a naatsit “was the only thing worn even when having guests or visiting the houses of other families,” says Toft. ”This shocked the Danish missionaries of the 18th and 19th century, who tried to convince the Inuit to wear European linen (longer) underwear indoors. This attempt was not very successful.”

Hey friends! It’s been a while since I posted anything on Devil May Wear. I have been taking a big break while I was in school. Just graduated with my Masters in Interdisciplinary Design and although I don’t have any textile news right now I wanted to share an event I thought you all might be excited about.

Mat Collective is hosting a FREE yoga class this Wednesday June 7th at 6:30 in Hadden Park (1905 Ogden Ave.)

If you haven’t been to a Mat Collective event before they are a fantastic, local organization that hosts yoga events all over town. This is their first of the 2023 season. Come down and join us for some yoga in the sun. Just make sure you sign up first to reserve a spot here: https://bookwhen.com/matcollective-classes/e/ev-s0pf-20230607190000

I love supporting local businesses and getting great ideas out there so I hope to see you all there (and at future events)!

Mat Collective is opening for the 2023 season and our 10th year. We are soft opening the season with a laid back yoga class with Drew. 60 minutes, all levels, trauma informed, free to participate.

When a crafter passes away mid-project, or is no longer able to carry on due to illness, they will likely have a few unfinished items layng around. They may even have projects they were making for friends or family which may become lost, donated or thrown away.
The Loose Ends Project aims to match unfinished projects with volunteer finishers who complete and return the project to the intended loved one.
If you have an unfinished project from someone who is no longer with us that you would like to have complete, visit https://www.looseendsproject.org/ and fill out their form. They will then match you with someone in your country who may be able to help you.
Alternatively, if you have some time to give and would like to become a volunteer finisher, sign up on their website.

It’s interesting seeing an article about the high price of free returns l online. We’ve never been able to offer free returns because it’s just too costly and we’d have to mark our product up so much more to cover it but having big retailers swallow the cost has made it impossible for small businesses to compete online. For the sake of small busin and the environmental impact I’d love to see the end of free returns (though I’m not implying final sale on everything either)

https://www.cbc.ca/radio/costofliving/online-free-returns-1.6654967?fbclid=IwAR2GuItKp52q81JftCcf6UPwjgfexNkRK-UvuVlIrTq5IuFJ9KSe4xHldh0

Online shoppers loved the idea of free returns so much that it became an industry standard. But it also costs retailers millions. Now, some companies are pushing back with surcharges or getting creative with new options.

Ooooh I have been having so much fun with eco-printing since I got into school for my masters. I can’t wait to reveal how amazing this project turned out.

Cedar soaked in iron bath on silk camisoles, slips, and bralettes. Sooooooooo good!!

I am hoping to stock up on eco printed fabrics over the season so I am ready to sew away come the fall.

Since we closed the store and I’ve been working on my masters I’m still excited to make beautiful pieces for all you lovely people but I am really trying to encourage people to buy less. I don’t want my art to be part of the over consumption problem. I want it to be part of a less is more (stuff) lifestyle and I want it to be special. I can’t force this on anyone but it’s something I think we should all consider working towards.

And in the meantime here’s an excellent list of no waste Christmas gift ideas as you consider the upcoming holiday season.
