It looks like a large tabby, until it turns and looks at you, and you see something in its eyes that has never once been tamed in ten thousand years. 🐾 This is the Scottish wildcat, the Highland tiger, and it is almost gone.

The Scottish wildcat is not a stray or a feral house cat gone large. It is a genuinely wild native animal, a survivor of the ancient forests that once covered the land, bigger and heavier than a domestic cat, with a thick, blunt, black-ringed tail and a fierce, wary nature that simply cannot be domesticated. Kittens raised by hand still grow up wild. It is the last wild cat left anywhere in Britain.

For centuries it was a symbol of Highland ferocity. Clans took it as their badge, and the old warning ran that you touch the wildcat at your peril. It prowled the pine forests and moors, hunting alone, avoiding humans, a ghost of the deep Caledonian wood. But persecution, loss of forest, and above all breeding with domestic cats have pushed the pure wildcat to the very edge of extinction, with only a small number of truly wild individuals thought to remain.

Now Scotland is fighting to save it. 🌲 Conservation projects are breeding wildcats and releasing them back into the Cairngorms, trying to rebuild a population before the Highland tiger vanishes from the hills forever, the way the wolf and the bear and the lynx already have.

There is something unbearably Scottish about this small, fierce, solitary creature that would rather die wild than live tamed. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The clans that carried the wildcat on their crests are still here. We owe it to them to make sure the wildcat is too.

Fierce to the last. Just like the people who claimed it.
