🏈 BEHIND THE LOGO: WHY ONLY ONE SIDE?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the only NFL team that places its logo on just one side of its helmet—but the tradition began as a temporary experiment.

In 1962, Cleveland-based Republic Steel suggested that Pittsburgh use the Steelmark, an emblem created to represent the American steel industry. The three four-pointed shapes are called hypocycloids. Their colours eventually came to represent three materials used in steelmaking: yellow for coal, orange for iron ore and blue for steel scrap.

Steelers owner Art Rooney Sr. wasn’t certain how the new logo would look on the team’s gold helmets, so equipment manager Jack Hart was instructed to apply it only to the right side as a test.

That season, Pittsburgh finished 9–5—the most successful season in franchise history at the time—and qualified for the Playoff Bowl. The team switched to black helmets for that game, making the Steelmark stand out even more.

Pittsburgh later received permission to change “Steel” to “Steelers” and changed the orange hypocycloid to red. The one-sided placement remained, turning a temporary test into one of football’s most recognizable traditions.

🏒 BEHIND THE LOGO: WHY DOES DETROIT HAVE A WINGED WHEEL?

The Winged Wheel looks as though it was created specifically for the Motor City—but its story actually begins in Montreal.

Before coming to Detroit, team owner James Norris had ties to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association’s hockey club, known as the Winged Wheelers. The club used a wheel with wings as its symbol and became an early Stanley Cup champion.

When Norris purchased the Detroit Falcons in 1932, he renamed them the Red Wings and adapted the Winged Wheel as the team’s new logo. The design’s connection to transportation made it a perfect fit for Detroit’s booming automobile industry.

The Winged Wheel first appeared in 1932 and has remained remarkably consistent ever since. It was refined slightly in 1948, when the wheel was made smaller, but the basic design has now represented Detroit hockey for more than 90 years.

This Detroit Red Wings jacket carries one of hockey’s most recognizable—and enduring—symbols.

🦁 BEHIND THE LOGO: THE 1960s LOGO THAT NEVER MADE IT ONTO A HELMET—UNTIL 2023

At first glance, this Detroit Lions mini helmet looks like a straightforward throwback. Its real story is much more interesting.

The prowling lion crossing two vertical stripes was part of the Lions’ identity from 1961 to 1969. The design was reportedly inspired by the running-horse badge of the Ford Mustang—a fitting connection between the team and Detroit’s automotive history.

Here’s the surprising part: despite being an official Lions logo during the 1960s, it was never used on the team’s helmets. Detroit’s silver helmets carried a different leaping-lion design instead.

That changed in 2023. As part of the franchise’s 90th-season celebration, the Lions placed the heritage logo on a modern Honolulu blue alternate helmet—finally giving the vintage design its place on the field more than 50 years later.

The alternate helmet was updated again in 2024, making this version a particularly memorable chapter in Lions uniform history.
