Claudia Jones was a strong black revolutionary woman. A profound organizer and prolific writer, Claudia helped chip away at the destructive systems that continue to oppress us today, capitalism & imperialism.

Her Communist background allowed her to connect the dots between the oppression she experienced and witnessed to the overall systemic issues in America. It also allowed her to understand the impact of imperialism on BIPOC nations worldwide. She understood that the enemy was not Communism but the fascist American government.

Their attempts at scaring her and other Communists out of organizing for multinational working class liberation were futile, to say the least. Even after serving time & being deported back to Britain, Claudia's work continued.

The repression Claudia faced due to her political beliefs shows us that instead of swallowing up anti-Socialist or anti-Communist propoganda, we should do our own research to determine the pros & cons of the current system versus a socialist/communist one.

There's a reason many of our Black leaders were/are Marxist-Leninists. And it wasn't because they were brainwashed!

Challenge what you think you know!

Nannie saw a need in her community and she acted on it.✊🏿✊🏿

During her time, schooling for black women was hard to come by.

Despite it being a risk to her life (racism), Nannie made it her duty to ensure black women had access to education.

She wanted to make sure they were self-reliant, confident, & that they had skills beyond the skills required for housework. The women were also required to take Negro studies.

Nannie did not receive the support she hoped for at first. Some movement leaders at the time, such as Booker T. Washington did not believe Black people in Washington D.C. would contribute financially to the initiative.

Other people disapproved because they didn't like the idea of women doing anything other than housework. Nannie proved them all wrong, receiving most of the schools contributions from Black women & children in the D.C. area.

Women attended the school from countries all over the world, such as Haiti. 🇭🇹.

Nannie also believed in Worker's Rights and started an organization to support the development of those rights for Black women.

The prison industrial complex impact millions of people and their families in the United States. Many incarcerated people are imprisoned for committing crimes of survival and/or for standing up against capitalism.

This indicates an overall issue in American society, not an issue with working-class people. We have a human right to have the things we need for survival, such as housing, education, healthcare, and food. When these things are hoarded by the billionaire class, it's only right the working class fight back.

It is our duty to fight for an end to mass incarceration. Safiya made it her life's work. She didn't let the wrath of state repression stop her fight for liberation for all.

How can you use your community power to fight to end the prison industrial complex?

Georgia Gilmore used nothing more than her talents, skills, & willingness to challenge racist laws & systems to help support the Montgomery Bus Boycotts.

She cooked, she communicated & collaborated with community members, she used what she had such as her home to provide a safe space, & she spoke up when it mattered!

Remember Georgia as you reflect on what you can do to support the movement for black lives.

We have enough talents & skills to move mountains! How will you utilize your power?

Study. Organize. Fight back.
ASPIRE TO BE REVOLUTIONARY!

And always remember, every month is Black History Month ✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
