Every country has its native dog. In Mongolia, the nomadic herders have the Bankhar, to protect their livestock from predation by the Mongolian gray wolf and snow leopard. Sadly, the important traditional role of the Bankhar as a guardian dog of the livestock was lost during the Soviet occupation, turning nomads to protect their herds by means of shooting. Should a wolf or leopard take some of their stock, it can be devastating. A herder family can lose up to 40% of their livestock. To face this challenge, bankhar.org is working towards placing the Bankhar dog with herder families, so they can return to their critical role as the mediator between the endangered predator species and the Mongolian herding families, helping both to continue to maintain their traditional lifestyles on the Steppe.
