Weekend hike idea: Lac de Derborence, Valais, Switzerland

Formed in 1749 when 50 million cubic metres of rock came down off the mountain above, damming the valley and creating Europe’s youngest natural lake. The area was avoided for two centuries afterward — locals believed it was cursed, and that’s why the mountain was renamed Les Diablerets: devil’s mountain.

The valley is now protected, home to Ecorcha, an old-growth forest with conifers up to 450 years old that grew back untouched on top of the rockfall debris.

The heatwave gripping Europe these past weeks has made the case for natural fabrics more relevant than ever.

Wool is an interesting one, as it normally makes people think of winter. Cold weather, layers, keeping warm — not something you’d reach for in 38-degree heat.

But merino wool is different. It’s ultra-soft, lightweight, naturally odour-resistant, and breathable in a way that makes it genuinely suited to summer.

We took the collection to Lussery, where Mathilda and her horse Quisas spend their days.

A big part of horse keeping is the slow, daily tending — the brushing, the feeding, the time in the stable.

For this, Mathilda chose merino on merino: the Light Merino Crewneck under the Merino Fleece Vest, both in Moon. Warm where you need it, breathable where you don’t, fuss-free either way.

Equestrianism is perhaps one of the last few performance worlds where natural materials never got displaced. Tack is leather. Saddle pads are wool. Waxed cotton is standard.

Riders care about how a material ages, breaks in, softens to the body, because the relationship with the gear mirrors the relationship with the animal, and both improve with use and care.

The horse didn’t mind the Ventile Blouson, quite the contrary.
