Down can be broken into a spectrum of effectiveness. We measure this effectiveness—“fill power”—by how many cubic inches one ounce of down can fill. The typical range is around 450 to 900, with 900 being the warmest and lightest… but also the priciest.

The warmest, lightest down comes at a premium price because it’s sourced from mature geese. This is the best insulator because the high-loft goose down has a very fine construction. Duck down is less fine than goose down and thus is less expensive, but also maintains slightly less loft.

Natural down is also incredibly resilient and—if properly cared for—can be used for many years. However, down has a few *ahem* downfalls: First, down is incapable of efficiently repelling moisture. In fact, it loses many of its insulating properties when it gets wet and is often slow to dry.

Down vs. Synthetic Insulation: What’s the difference?

Down Insulation

You might not believe us, but down is not made from feathers. Down insulation is made from goose or duck plumage – the lofty, fluffy stuff underneath the feathers. It is an undercoating, or a natural midlayer. Nature’s best insulation, down creates high-loft clusters that keep air and body heat from escaping. In addition to its ability to efficiently trap heat, down is also incredibly breathable, allowing it to wick unwanted moisture away from your body to evaporate.

Because of its supreme warmth-to-weight ratio and incredible compressibility—which makes it very easy to pack—down is considered the crème de la crème of insulators. It remains lightweight and compressible while holding you in a cocoon of warmth, definitely something to consider when debating what to take on your trek and what to leave in the closet.

THE BENEFITS OF GOOSE DOWN BEDDING

Who doesn’t love a warm and cozy comforter? A soft and fluffy pillow? Anyone who has experienced the luxurious softness of down comforters, pillows, and other bedding will hands down tell you that goose down provides the best all-around sleep experience.

What is Goose Down and What Makes It Ideal?

Down is the soft, fluffy material below the fowls’ outer feathers. Down is known for its softness and its thermal qualities. Of all the types of down available, goose down is considered the finest on the market and ideal for bedding filling. The down that comes from geese is generally clustered in larger segments than other types of down, like duck down, for example, meaning that goose down produces a higher fill power for bedding like comforters and pillows.

Higher fill powers generally equate to more warmth and exquisite softness. Goose down is also more resilient and more durable than duck down, meaning a goose down product will often last longer and offer greater comfort.

Olante Feather Down is a leading manufacturer of high-quality down products

Feather Down is a natural product made from the highest quality goose feathers. It has been used to provide insulation and comfort for centuries. It is made from duck or goose feathers and the down of their udders.

The two most important factors in down quality are the percentage of down and the size of the feathers. The manufacturing process has been refined, and the end result is a quality product that is both durable and comfortable.

Filling made of feathers is not as comfortable as down filling. Feathers are crushed and used to fill less expensive products which have a lesser degree of insulation. If you have ever felt poked by a filled garment or comforter, then you have experienced feather filling; pieces of broken quill sometimes work their way through the covering fabric and poke out.

White down, used exclusively by Alright, is preferable to brown or grey down. White down gives a bright, clean appearance to products. Non-white feathers can show through the outer covering on a comforter or pillow and cast a dingy or off coloring.

Finally, down from geese is preferable to down from ducks for several reasons. Geese are larger than ducks; consequently, their down clusters are larger. This size factor increases the insulating properties of geese down.

Alright endeavors to provide the finest quality of down filling to their customers, both inside and out. Our pillows and comforters are filled with the best quality all-white goose down that provides the properties of warm insulation with comfortable lightweight.

How to Check the Warmth of a White Goose Down Comforter

There are a few ways to check the warmth of your white goose down comforter. One way is to feel the weight of the comforter. Heavier comforters will usually be warmer than lighter comforters. Another way to check the warmth of your comforter is to look at the fill power. The fill power is a measure of how much space one ounce of down takes up in the comforter. The higher the fill power, the warmer the comforter will be.

If you are unsure if your white goose down comforter is warm enough, there are a few things that you can do to check.

First, try putting it on your bed and lying under it for a few minutes. If you find that you are comfortable and warm, then the comforter is likely warm enough.

Another way to check is to feel the outside of the comforter. If it feels warm to the touch, then it is likely warm enough.

Another way to check the warmth of a comforter is to look at the fill power. The higher the fill power, the warmer the comforter will be.
To check the warmth of a white goose down comforter, you will need to feel the fabric and see if it is warm to the touch. You can also ask someone else to help you by feeling the comforter for you.

Third, check the loft of the comforter. The loft is the space between the top and bottom of the comforter where your body heat can escape. The higher the loft, the warmer it will be.

fourth, look at the fill power of the comforter. Fill power is a measure of fluffiness and warmth. The higher the fill power, the warmer it will be.

fifth, consider other factors such as thread count and fabric type. A high thread count will make a comforter more durable, but it will also trap heat better. A cotton fabric will breathe better than a synthetic fabric, but synthetic fabrics are usually cheaper.

Finally, you can also consult the manufacturer's instructions to see what they recommend for the warmth of the comforter. There are a few ways to check the warmth of a white goose down comforter. One way is to feel the fabric. If it is thin and feels cool to the touch, it is not as warm as a comforter with a thicker fabric.

HOW TO CARE FOR DOWN BEDDING

When it comes to bedding, Down filling is considered the epitome of luxury bedding products. For many, it’s a long term investment to achieve adequate sleep. Therefore, you’ll need to clean your products to maintain the quality and integrity of the fabric and filling.

When the time comes to clean your Down bedding products, dry cleaning is an option – but not a must. You can easily wash and dry your down comforters, pillows, and blankets safely at home.

DOWN BEDDING CARE

* Always follow the fabric care instructions on the label.
One of the best attributes of Natural Down filling is it can be washed over and over. Laundering your Down bedding reinvigorates the bedding product’s fluffiness. Down bedding products should be cleaned at 140F (60C) or at 104F (40C) with a non-chlorine bleach-based laundry detergent to kill any germs and bacteria.

PILLOWS

Down and Feather Pillows will typically fit into any washing machine. We recommend washing two at a time to keep your washer balanced. Dry on the warmest setting possible according to the fabric care instructions. It may take multiple cycles to get the pillows completely dry; feel free to add a couple of tennis balls to speed up the drying time and add extra fluff.

DOWN COMFORTERS & BLANKETS

Down comforters and blankets should be washed with hot water and detergent. Dry on the warmest cycle possible according to the fabric care instructions on the label. Add 2 or 3 tennis balls for extra fluffiness. If you experience any clumping or odor, that means it’s not completely dry and needs to go through another drying cycle.

True allergies to Down & Feather are, in fact, quite rare. Alright Feather&Down uses only down & feather which goes through a rigorous cleaning process and uses a special treatment to render the fill hypo-allergenic.

Some people may be allergic to dust, pollen, and bacteria that reside in down & feather before it is cleaned and sanitized. Unlike products that are not properly sanitized and cleaned, or products from decades ago that may not have had any cleaning process, all Canadian Down & Feather Company products meet and exceed all government and industry standards and regulations.

There is still a possibility that individuals may be allergic to dust mites that inhabit bedding products while in use. Using a mite proof protector on new or newly cleaned duvets, pillows, and featherbeds will eliminate most of these problems.

Many people are under the impression that polyester is a better choice than down and feather products for those who suffer from allergies. However, two different studies printed in the British Journal of Medicine have concluded that this is not the case. The studies show that polyester pillows support dust mites to a greater extent than do down pillows. One of the studies went as far as stating that asthmatics did better with down bedding than with polyester.
