After the briefing, each couple got an instructor to guide us underwater. At first, it was surreal and nerve-wracking, breathing underwater like that. But soon enough, we were posing by a Poseidon statue 10 meters down! We spotted a shark and an eel, though I noticed the coral wasn’t very colorful—likely from coral bleaching. Still, the experience was unforgettable.

For my husband’s 40th birthday this year, I decided to surprise him with a trip to San Andres. Since he’s a huge fan of the beach, I knew an island getaway would be perfect. Although San Andres is technically closer to Nicaragua, it’s actually part of Colombia—a unique destination with so mu...

When I moved to Pasto, Colombia, it took me about six months to become fluent enough in Spanish that I could get by in any Spanish-speaking country. I could talk about myself, ask for directions, order in a restaurant, and engage in small talk.

Some people ask me how important it is to speak Spanish in Colombia. I believe that if you want to enjoy a meaningful life in any country, the more you excel in the native language, the better. In Colombia, the limited use of English, even in big cities, is actually a benefit.I’m from Montreal, wh...

That being said, we really enjoyed our visit. Yes, it was packed, but it was still a sight to behold. I definitely want to go back during the off-season to fully experience everything. Now that I’ve been, I’d say it’s more like a timeshare than a theme park. My advice is to stay for at least 4 nights and consider splurging on a hotel either on-site or nearby. There’s so much to see, and it’s well worth it.

For "Semana Santa" (Holy Week) last year in April, we went to Hacienda Nápoles. It’s located in the sweltering Río Magdalena, and if you’re not careful, you might run into one of Pablo Escobar’s escaped hippo descendants. Seriously, it happens from time to time! Here's one such incident. We d...

Suffice it to say, I feel much more at ease regarding my family’s health here in Colombia compared to Canada. The accessibility, prompt care, and overall experience have truly made a difference in our lives

Last month, my husband developed cellulitis. If you’re not familiar, it’s a bacterial skin infection that can become life-threatening without prompt treatment. Our insurance here in Colombia is pretty basic—similar to what most employees receive, with employers covering a significant portion. ...

One cultural norm I’ve embraced from living in Colombia—especially in Pasto, which is a much smaller city than Medellín—is making lunch the main family meal of the day rather than dinner. It’s so much healthier for digestion and just makes more sense. I’d rather not prepare a large meal right before bedtime, spending the whole evening cooking and cleaning. In Pasto, everyone would take a two-hour break from work and school in the middle of the day to have lunch with their families. I loved that!

Is the food terrible? Flavorful? Healthier? Everyone has their own opinion! As for me, I believe that wherever you go, there you’ll be. What do I mean by this? When I first came to Colombia, my roommate was Jamaican, and she managed to cook some pretty amazing dishes by sourcing the right spices. ...

Colombia is an absolutely beautiful country with a stunning array of landscapes. When I first decided to visit Colombia back in 2016, one spot that was high on my bucket list was Caño Cristales. I stumbled upon it during my research, even before the movie Encanto came out. If you've seen that movie, you’ll remember the breathtaking pink and yellow river where Mirabel and her abuelita make up at the end, surrounded by butterflies. It’s based off of Caño Cristales, also known as the River of Five Colors, or the Liquid Rainbow.....

"In terms of my personal experience in Colombia, I’ve only had one negative incident: I was mugged in Pasto. In retrospect, it’s kind of a funny story because I think the mugger was holding a BBQ fork instead of a knife (though I wouldn’t want to get stabbed with that either!). As a first-time mugging victim, I panicked and handed over my backpack, purse, and even my jacket. The only reason I could tell it was a BBQ fork was that he had to stop to pick up all the random things I dropped! I like to think that after that encounter, he told his friends not to rob the overly dramatic “gringa.” As my then-boyfriend, now-husband, later pointed out, he probably just wanted my phone."

This is the big question, isn’t it? While I’d love to say a resounding no, that wouldn’t be the truth. However, I can say that it’s not significantly more dangerous than other large cities around the world. As a mom who moved here with my family, I want to focus on that perspective. Of course...

By August of 2022, both my husband and I had found remote jobs, which really encouraged us to take the plunge and sell or pack up our belongings to move to the City of Eternal Spring—Medellín!There’s no other way to say it: Medellín caters to digital nomads. It’s not uncommon to see high-ris...
