Another Rooster tamed! (Rooster-tail Palm that is). Dry season may not be the time for planting, but it is the best time for trimming and pruning your trees and palms. Removing dead, diseased, rotting and improperly cut branches or fronds eliminates places for pests (including ants and snakes) to take up residence and reduces the potential for damaging and/or hazardous situations to occur. Dry season/High season is the slow season for garden 'making' here in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica. TAMING THE ROOSTER – Once upon a time, there were two beautiful, but monstrous, Rooster Tail Palms/Palm reals, that were hovering - like Godzilla above the Empire State Building - over the new house being constructed by my friend Pat Cheek. During a tour of the construction site, I was happy to hear that Pat did NOT want to kill the Rooster Tails, but merely “tame” them. She was hoping that I could be of assistance in getting the Rooster Tails to be a little more “neighborly”. Beau, the contractor, also felt that the palms were way too close to the house and would cause problems with the nearing roof construction and to the house’s structure in the future. The lingering thought of snakes taking up residents in the matted mess of the palms was also something Pat wanted to deter. Our acrobatic, fearless tree trimmer, Abel, came to the rescue. Hours later, everyone was happy – well maybe not the snakes – and the Rooster Tail Palms and Pat can now live side by side and…… happily ever after. The End

Today's garden pic from Casa las Nubes. One of my very favorite garden jobs. I spend 2 hours/week there instructing their full-time gardener and teaching him new gardening/maintenance techniques. He has come a long way and is doing a great job........don't you think?

Since 2005, I have designed and supervised the installation of 21 gardens throughout the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area, under either my old business name of Botanical Garden Excursions, SA or Inspire Me Gardens, SRL. With many of those gardens, I have not been involved with their maintenance. As a designer and a Horticulturist, it is difficult to create a garden and then leave it in the hands of others, especially without having a hand in gardener training. I have sometimes returned later to see a garden I designed almost totally unrecognizable to me.

I offer gardener training as part of my services. I teach gardeners how to make compost, how to amend (feed) the soil using that compost, how to prune correctly (without a machete) and something called IPM - Integrated Pest Management (vs. spray all, kill all). I also teach water-conserving techniques that are becoming more important even here in the lowland tropical rainforest. I teach gardeners how to water correctly (sounds odd, but its true) and what is mulch and how to mulch - something almost unheard of in CR.
