An annual event for many years, the walk starts from the village square at 6am on the first Sunday in August. This is the time people return to their roots for their festival and other events such as the TAVLI competition. Through the winding streets to Toiharka, pass the Vasilikon winery and the goat herds to the Mountiko Forest. After reaching the newly built church of Panayia Matrona, downhill
to Lara Beach in the Akamas Peninsula National Park, a little further is St Georges church and the restaurant for lots water, coffee and breakfast. Starting Place: Village Square

The walk takes about 3 hour. It is mostly downhill with two uphill stretches about half a km each. In the past people as young as 6 years old and as old as 71 years old took part. Please note that people travel at their own risk and usually a car follows for anybody struggling, with help at hand. It is advisable to wear correct walking shoes, hat and bring water with you. Early in August, my parents would take us to St George for our annual summer holidays. The two donkeys would carry us, three young children, clothing and a week’s supply of food, bread, halloumi, olives and onions and of course our favourite Corn Beef! Setting off at three in the morning through the forest, in the dark, with the myriads of stars in the sky, a mixture of fear and excitement was going through our minds. In 2009, out of nostalgia and wishing to relive this donkey route, two friends and I decided to walk from our village Kathikas to St George. When people in the village heard of our walk and adventure, they said they really wanted to come and join us. We decided to make this into an annual walk and over the years, as more people heard of the walk, over 100+ people now take part, from all over Cyprus, young and old. Looking at how the walk caused such enthusiastic interest, I wanted to somehow give it a purpose, and since becoming a permanent resident again of my birth village, even though Kathikas being so wonderful and beautiful with a fantastic climate, I saw there was room for improvement and wanted to start planting within the village to make it greener. I decided to ask for voluntary sponsorship of the Kathikas fun walk with all proceeds going to this cause. With the help and additional economic support of the Kathikas Municipality, over the years, hundreds of trees, plants, plant pots and hanging baskets have been purchased and planted around the village, with village residents volunteering to daily take care and maintain them. Στις αρχές Αυγούστου, οι γονείς μου μας πήγαιναν στον Άγιο Γεώργιο για τις καλοκαιρινές μας διακοπές. Τα δύο γαϊδουράκια μας μετέφερναν, τρία μικρά παιδιά, ρούχα και μιας εβδομάδας φαγητό, ψωμί, χαλούμι, ελιές και κρεμμύδια και φυσικά το αγαπημένο μας πολυπιφ!
Ξεκινώντας στις τρεις το πρωί μέσα στο δάσος, στο σκοτάδι, με μυριάδες αστέρια στον ουρανό, ένα μείγμα φόβου και ενθουσιασμού περνούσε από το μυαλό μας.
Το 2009, λόγω νοσταλγίας και επιθυμίας να ξαναζήσουμε αυτήν τη διαδρομή, δύο φίλοι κι εγώ αποφασίσαμε να περπατήσουμε από το χωριό μας Κάθικας στον Άγιο Γεώργιο Πέγειας.
Όταν οι άνθρωποι στο χωριό άκουσαν για τη βόλτα και την περιπέτειά μας, είπαν ότι ήθελαν πραγματικά να έρθουν και αυτοί. Αποφασίσαμε να καθιερώσουμε τον περίπατο ως ένα ετήσιο γεγονός και με την πάροδο των ετών, καθώς περισσότεροι άνθρωποι άκουγαν για τον περιβόητο αυτόν περίπατο, τώρα πλέον συμμετέχουν πάνω από 100 άτομα, από όλη την Κύπρο, νέοι και ηλικιωμένοι.
Βλέποντας πώς ο περίπατος προκάλεσε τόσο ενθουσιώδες ενδιαφέρον, ήθελα κάπως να του δώσω έναν σκοπό, και από τότε που έγινα μόνιμος κάτοικος του χωριού μου, παρόλο που ο Κάθικας ήταν τόσο υπέροχος και όμορφος με ένα φανταστικό κλίμα, είδα ότι υπήρχε χώρος για βελτίωση και περισσότερο πράσινο. Έτσι αποφάσισα να ζητήσω εθελοντική χορηγία για τον περίπατο του Κάθικα με όλα τα έσοδα να πηγαίνουν σε αυτόν τον σκοπό, την δενδροφύτευση και περιποίηση των λουλουδιών.
Με τη θερμή υποστήριξη και την οικονομική συνεισφορά του συμβουλίου Καθικα, με το πέρασμα των χρόνων εκατοντάδες δέντρα, φυτά, γλάστρες και κρεμαστά καλάθια έχουν αγοραστεί και φυτευτεί γύρω από το χωριό.
Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στους συγχωριανούς μας που καθημερινά εθελοντικά τα φροντίζουν και συντηρούν.
