Mein erster Versuch mit Kultschlafsack meine Idee individuelle Schlafsäcke von einer großen Schlafsackfirma produzieren zu lassen, war ein Reinfall. Es war halt wieder nur Gewinndenken angesagt und deshalb ließen sich meine Ideen kaum verwirklichen. Es endete wie so oft in Streit und vor Gericht. Nun stand ich da: „Soll ich aufgeben?. Hmmm nö, ich geb’ nicht so schnell auf!“ Also googeln was das Z
eug hält und ‚ne Schlafsackfirma suchen. Leider war alles was ich in Deutschland oder umliegenden Ländern fand zu teuer. Da hatte ich schon etwas Bammel. Nach langem Suchen fand ich 3 Firmen.

My first attempt to make sleeping bags with the help of a big sleeping bag manufacturing company turned out to be a total disaster. They were just focused on making profit and therefore I couldn't realize my ideas. The whole thing ended up, as it happens so often, in dispute, and a court trial. After that, I asked myself: Should I give up? Hmmm, no, I won't give up that easily! So I looked for a sleeping bag manufacturing company on the web. Unfortunately, everything I found in Germany and neighboring countries was too expensive. So I needed to expand my research to Asia . After a long research, I found three companies.

Ok, allen Mut zusammen, rein in den Flieger und ab nach Asien. Nach 14 Stunden Flug und mindestens drei Checks an Kontrollstationen ob ich Fieber hab (das machen Chinesen gerne) war ich in Shanghai. Oje bisschen größer als München - hmm und ein klein wenig unübersichtlich. Ich hatte drei Adressen, die wollte ich gleich am ersten Tag besuchen. Ab ins Taxi und zur ersten. Aber war nicht so leicht zu finden. Kleine Seitenstraße rein und das Taxi hielt vor einer Art Garage. Eh was ist das, sind wir richtig? Oje, eine Garagenfirma - Ok sah im Internet größer aus. Nach zwei Minuten Smalltalk war klar, die können das nicht. Weiter zur nächsten Adresse, Hochhause X-ter Stock, Raum 50000001. Hm der Raum klein, aber voll mit Essen und zwei verschlafenen Chinesen. Oje das geht auch nicht. Los zur dritten Adresse. Wow eine riesige Firma - die wären ok. Machen seit zig Jahren Schlafsäcke. Wurde auch vom Boss empfangen. Allerdings waren denen meine Stückzahlen zu klein. Ich wollte viele Designs und nicht nur eins. Mmpf - entmutigt bin ich dann ins Hotel. Aufgeben oder weitermachen?

Ok, I took all my courage and bought a flight ticket and after a 14-hour-flight and at least three temperature checks at control stations to know if I had a fever (Chinese like these kind of things), I was in Asia, to be precise, in Shanghai . Ohh, it's a little bit bigger than Munich - hmm, and a little bit confusing also. I had three addresses, which I immediately wanted to visit on the first day. I took a taxi to get to the first address. But it was not so easy to find. After driving through small and alternative streets, the taxi driver stopped in front of a garage -" are we right?"- Oh dear, a garage company – It looked bigger on the internet. After two minutes of small talk, it was clear that this was not the right company. We moved on to the next address, a skyscraper Xth floor, room 50,000,001. The room was small, but full with food and two sleepy Chinese guys. Oh I think this isn't good either. We started our way to the 3rd address. Wow! what a huge company – this could be ok. They make sleeping bags since many years, so they have a lot experience. I was picked up by the boss but soon he told me the amount I wanted to get produced was too small because I wanted many designs, not just only one. -Mmpf- I went back to the the hotel discouraged. Should I go on or stop the project?

Ich hatte einen guten Freund in Deutschland mit Beziehungen zu China. Ok, ich ruf an, bin ja schließlich eine Woche hier und was soll ich sonst tun. Und ich hatte Glück, er kannte den Manager einer großen deutschen Computerfirma die dort produziert und hatte auch gleich ein Treffen organisiert. Ich fuhr also in das riesige neue Offfice und stand einem extrem hohen Tier gegenüber. Und!!! Er war nett!!!! Wow‼! Er lies einige Mitarbeiter Firmen für
Schlafsäcke raussuchen und dann ging’s mit Limousine zu den Firmen, das machte gleich einen ganz anderen Eindruck, heheheh! Und tatsächlich, eine große Firma, die auch für andere Schlafsackmarken produziert sagte zu. Wow Grüezig-bag war geboren! Und nichts war ein Problem, ich konnte alle Design umsetzen, alle Schnitte und auch die Materialien die ich wollte machten sie für mich. So lässt es sich arbeiten. (nur das mit dem Essen müssen die in China noch mal überarbeiten, man war mir schlecht. Die essen vielleicht ein Zeug, Hühnerkrallen, Aale und anderes Nichtdefinierbares, bääh!)

I remembered, I have a good friend in Germany who has some connections in China . -Ok, I'll call him- I thought. I still had to stay a week in China and it was better trying other options before giving up. I had good luck. My friend knew the manager of a large German computer company which produced there in China and he immediately arranged an appointment for me. So I went into a huge new office and met an extremely important executive. And surprise! He was nice! He asked his staff to help me and look for some sleeping bag manufacturing companies. He also took me in his limousine and we drove me to big companies.
-In this car, I will have more success hehehe!!!- I thought. In fact, a large company, agreed to produce my sleeping bag. And then, the Grüezi Bag was born! And nothing was a problem. I was able to implement all my designs along with all the cuts and the materials I wanted. They made everything for me (only the food was terrible, chicken feet, soup with eyes and many ugly things, I felt so sick bah!)

Am schwierigsten war es mein Design umzusetzen. Ich musste jeden Stoff selber entwickeln und drucken lassen, es gab so was vorher noch nicht. Und teilweise war ich erschrocken was das für ein Aufwand ist. Wenn ein Schlafsackdesign 10 Farben hat brauch man 10 Riesenrollen aus Alu mit 5m Länge und 60cm Durchmesser. Und die sind teuer. Aber dafür sind meine Schlafsäcke auch etwas Besonderes. Es wurden viele, viele Muster gemacht, Schnitt nachgebessert, mehr gefüllt, verschiedene Materialien ausgesucht. Endlich fertig…ein Schlafsack den man nicht mehr aus der Hand geben möchte. So weich und kuschlig, technisch hochwertig und einfach so, dass man sich hineinlegen muss. Und cool im Design!!! Weiter zum TÜV SÜD in Shanghai (ja den gibt’s auch da und ist auch bayrisch). Hier testen was das Zeug hält, damit der Schlafsack sich nicht nur gut anfühlt, sondern auch gesund ist. Alles im grünen Bereich halt.

The most challenging thing was to implement my designs. I had to develop and print each substance.. I was scared by this effort at some times. If a sleeping bag design has 10 colors I need 10 giant rolls of aluminum with 5m length and 60cm of diameter. And they are expensive. But this is one of the things that make my sleeping bags so special. Finally done, a sleeping bag with very comfortable material, so soft and cuddly, with high technical quality and so, that everybody will love it. And with a cool design! The next step was getting to TÜV SÜD in Shanghai (Yes, it's also here and it's also Bavarian). The tests here were crazy, because the sleeping bag not only has to look healthy, it has to be healthy too. Everything clear.

Jetzt zu meinem Meisterstück - ein Daunenschlafsack. Den plane ich schon seit 20 Jahren. Neues Kammernsystem, neue Materialien. Das war echt schwer! Wieder hat ein Freund aus Deutschland Vorarbeit geleistet und ich konnte mich mit einer Expertin in Sachen Daunenschlafsack treffen. Ich zeigte ihr mein neues Konzept. Sie war sehr kritisch, echt sehr, sehr kritisch, rechnete alles durch: Wärmeverhalten, Verbrauch, Gewicht usw. und ließ dann tatsächlich ein Muster machen. Ich glaub’s nicht: er war besser als ich ihn mir vorgestellt hab! Das Kammersystem hab ich von der Natur abgeschaut, es ist wie ein Spinnennetz aufgebaut, (und in der Mitte hatten sie meine Spinne eingestickt J) dadurch kann die Daune nicht verrutschen. Innen wollte ich Merino im Fußbereich haben, das hält die Füße trocken und warm und verhindert Geruchsbildung: hehehe antistink! Auch hochwertige Außen- und Innenmaterialien und eine 90/10 Daune und kleines Packmaß. Alles war dran. Ich konnte wieder zurück nach Deutschland. Chinesen sind sehr nett. Man muss sie nur verstehen: es sind Menschen wie wir, nur denken sie etwas anders. Aber nach ein paar Bier sind wir alle gleich.

Now to my masterpiece - a down sleeping bag. I have already worked on it for 20 years. New chamber system, new materials. It was really hard! Again I needed the help from my friend in Germany to be able to meet an expert in down sleeping bags. I showed her my new concept. She was very critical, really very, very critical, and measured a lot: thermal behavior, consumption, weight, etc. and after that, she allowed to make my pattern. Unbelievable, the finished sample was better than I imagined it would be! I copied the chamber system from the nature, it is built like a spider web (and they embroidered my spider in the middle) and prevents the down for slipping around. Inside in the feet area I have merino wool which will keep the feet warm and dry and prevent stinky feet hehehe! Even high-quality exterior and interior materials and a 90/10 down can fit in a small pack size. Everything was in progress. I could go back to Germany . Chinese people are very nice. You should only try to understand them: there are people like us, they just think a little different. But after a few beers, we are all equal. Markus Wiesböck
