CHILDREN SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO PAY THE PRICE FOR ADULTS’ RACISM.
What happened in Berlin concerns all of us.
A space for children.
An afternoon full of joy.
A place where Black children and young people can simply be and belong.
And then that very space is made impossible by racist threats.
The Children and Youth Department of Each One Teach One (EOTO) e.V., together with Berlin’s Volksbühne, had planned a protected afternoon at the Volksbad for Black, African and Afro-diasporic children, young people and their families.
Following racist threats, threats of violence and discriminatory comments, EOTO felt compelled to cancel the event because the physical and psychological safety of the young people could no longer be guaranteed.
This makes us sad. And it demonstrates exactly why spaces like these are needed in the first place.
Children should never have to pay the price for adults’ racism.
Creating a protected space for a structurally disadvantaged group does not mean devaluing or excluding others.
It means giving people a space where, for a moment, they do not have to explain, justify or defend who they are.
For children, that sense of belonging can be incredibly important.
At Kidsimply, we talk a lot about representation, diversity and ensuring that every child feels seen and welcome.
But belonging cannot just be a beautiful message in a children’s book.
We also have to make it possible — and protect it — in the real world.
Our solidarity is with EOTO, and above all with the children, young people and families who had this afternoon taken away from them. 💜
