DRIVE LIKE JEHU_ Golden Brown (1994)

Drive Like Jehu were a San Diego Post-Hardcore band formed in 1990 by guitarist/vocalist Rick Froberg and guitarist John Reis, following their earlier work together in Pitchfork. With Mike Kennedy on bass and Mark Trombino on drums, they developed an abrasive, highly kinetic sound built around interlocking guitars, shifting time signatures, unusual song structures and Froberg’s intensely expressive vocals. They became one of the defining bands of the early-’90s San Diego scene, pushing Hardcore toward something more angular, complex and emotionally volatile, and later became an important influence on the development of Emo and Noise Rock. After the band split in the mid-’90s, Reis and Froberg reunited in Hot Snakes, carrying elements of Jehu’s guitar attack into a leaner, more direct form. Their influence continued to grow long after their original run, with Pitchfork and other outlets eventually recognizing Drive Like Jehu as one of the key American Post-Hardcore bands of their era.
