Soona Otomi Berlin

Soona Otomi Berlin Soona Otomi supports fair trade working together with women cooperatives that keep traditional textiles alive. Soona means Moon in Otomi language.

In Soona Otomi we support women cooperatives by fair trading, paying fair prices to support their economy and to help them to keep this beautiful tradition alive. Otomi embroidery is a lost art practiced only by a small number of indigenous Otomi in the villages of the Sierra Madre. It can often take months to complete a single piece, which makes each completed piece the more special. Incorporate

colorful images of animals and native people. The real and mystical imagery of the textiles depict the Otomi cosmovision originally recorded in regional cliff drawings. One of the early complex cultures of Mesoamerica, the Otomi were likely the original inhabitants of the central Mexican altiplano before the arrival of Nahuatl speakers around ca. 1000 CE, but gradually they were replaced by Nahuatl peoples. We also have in our catalog Mayan pieces done by members from small communities in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. All our textiles are completely made with traditional methods , using materials such as wool , cotton yarn and natural dyes. This includes hand-woven fabric , which is made on backstrap looms . Embroidery designs are traditional also , because they contain ancient symbolic images of a syncretism of Maya and Christian worldviews.

Hope everyone had an amazing Christmas 🎄❤️!

I'm recovering from a cold that hit me on Christmas Eve. Spent the night of the 24th with a box of tissues and dinner with my lovely husband. 🤧

These recovery days have been all about relaxation and despite still feeling under the weather, I've enjoyed every moment. It's been a month of non-stop work, so I'm savoring this downtime in my cozy living room with my Christmas tree, movies and yummy food.

How was your Christmas? What's your favorite holiday dinner? Did Santa bring you any goodies? 🎅🏻

Tomorrow's Tuesday, and I'll be back at the store with regular hours. 🙌🏼

🎄✨ The Magic Behind Mexican Christmas Piñatas!✨🎄

In Mexico, Christmas isn’t complete without a colorful piñata filled with candies, fruit and festive surprises! But did you know these vibrant stars have a deeper meaning?

The traditional Christmas piñata is shaped like a seven-point star, each point representing a temptation to overcome. The act of breaking the piñata — blindfolded and guided by the cheering crowd — symbolizes faith defeating negativity, while the treats raining down represent the joy and rewards that follow.

This joyful tradition arrived in the 16th century, blending Indigenous celebrations with Christian customs. Today, piñatas are everywhere during posadas (December 16–24), when families and friends gather to sing, break the piñata and share laughter… sometimes a few playful hits too! 😄

From paper and cardboard to handmade artisanal designs, each piñata is a burst of Mexican creativity — bold, colorful and ready to spark smiles.
