One last post to announce that I am closing my web shop for good at the end of November. I am relieved, proud, happy and all the good feelings about it. Kaliko is such a personal business and I am super proud that it carried me for 7 years but now it’s time to say goodbye and close this chapter. Which mean, 3 more days for you to buy anything that I might have left - a few project bags, some looms in two sizes, last silk scarves. Bags and scarves I am actually happy to keep but I don’t need 15 more looms, trust me I have enough as it is 😂 and I would really love for more people to try weaving. This humble craft completely changes my life, pushed me into starting a business and that in turn made me who I am today. I still love weaving, seeing a cloth being formed by my two hands, the tactility of the process, the colors, the textures, the meditative slowness of it. Weaving can be anything you want it to be for you, give it a chance. Have a look at my webshop and do yourself a favor by getting one.

Time to put my feet up. I’ve been working on Kaliko for 9 years now, first as a side hustle, then full time for years, and by the end part-time again, as I was slowly falling out of love with running a business. In 2 months I will move out of my studio, and I’m planning to deregister the company by the end of the year. It’s been a wild ride and a successful project that took me places I never imagined, which I’m grateful for. But I’m missing creativity without financial pressure and I don’t think having a product-based business can ever give me that. It only gave me a massive burnout which I’m luckily on the other side of already and able to see what’s serving me and what’s not 🙏
I’m selling out all my stock at the moment, 90% of it is already gone (thank you!) but there are still a few project bags and looms for grabs. Heavily discounted of course!
It was so lovely to supply you with products that help YOU be creative over the years and I wanted to thank you for all the heartfelt support and great feedback 🫶
I’m definitely not abandoning plant dyeing and weaving for good, but I’m making space for projects that will feed my soul. I’m always open for collaborations with brands and artists, and I will be experimenting further with the ideas I had to abandon during the years. Let’s see what this shift brings. To celebrate I dyed these lovely woolen socks with my favorite dye plant (goldenrod) last night, to bring some sunshine to my feet:)

It’s been quiet at Kaliko but it doesn’t mean nothing is happening. I’m slowly building down the stock (yes, sale is coming), preparing for moving out from my studio of 6 years and relocating all work back to my own kitchen, the way it was 8 years ago when Kaliko first started.
In the meantime I’m working on custom projects, like this color development for a sustainable tote bag design. I was sent a color sample and asked to match it with plant dyes. Here are some colors I came up with for the client. Each sample comes with a detailed recipe.
The task turned out more challenging than I anticipated, as this particular thick canvas went very dark very fast most of the time:) I used cutch as base, logwood to cool the color, as well as iron for muting the results. There are only very slight variations in the recipes, but the range of result is actually pretty wide. Matching exact colors with plant dyes is quite an alchemy:) and there is no way to do it without developing samples as each fabric takes up the dyes differently. For projects like that keeping thorough notes is the key!

Another great workshop behind me, and you can tell all participants were architects, because our final matrix of colors is laid out perfectly 😗👌😍

Next workshop is happening already in less than 2 weeks (Natural Tie-dye on October 26th) and there’s also a date in November (Bundle Dyeing on November 23rd). If you need help booking, let me know.

I spent the last week in my tiny house, off from work, cooking, swimming in the nearby lake, listening to music (being made) and painting. I didn’t dare to go bigger than A5 format yet but that’s a good start I think. On Monday I’m back to my remote office job, but staying here for a couple more weeks, and hope to find energy to paint some more. Here are some things I painted in two of my favorite mediums.

This house is just the best.

Documenting last week at my house. It’s been 4 years since I found this plot of land for sale and look where I’m at now. ✌️ I’ll be back in a week for some more work and leisure.

Signing off for the weekend wearing funky jeans. This is by that was originally white and got badly stained. I upcycled it with alder cones and iron to look cool on Berlin streets ✌️because when in doubt, turn to plants for help (serves me well every time!).
The pants belonged to my sister originally but she doesn’t feel comfortable wearing funky stuff so I not only got to play, I also get to keep them. Jackpot :)

Eco wprint on vintage linen 80x120cm. I originally wanted to paint something for this wall in my tiny house but I couldn’t find the time (or will…) so I did what I do best - turned to plants for help. I got this beautiful vintage linen from , printed it with logwood and rose, sewed both pieces together and stretched on stretcher bars. It took some experimenting to get an interesting and lasting print but I think it’s good enough and it can stay here for a while until I actually paint something like I originally intended.

Well, what a year. I usually write a year’s review for my blog but I absolutely don’t feel like it this year. Might come sometime in January, or maybe never.
I just wanted to hop on tell you that I feel blessed to have connected with so many of you via this platform in 2023 and throughout the years, that I feel extremely sad about the world right now and the for all the people who suffer, and at the same time so lucky to be alive, finding new joys every day.
To celebrate this weird year and finally let it go I’ll be starting a fire in the fireplace in my tiny house, listening to music and cuddling my dog (if he let me).
I’ll see you in 2024, either at workshops (new dates on my website) or here. Hugs ♥️
