I still love watching The Fifth Element.
Leeloo was the first strong female character I ever looked up to. Strong, but still feminine. That was a rare thing to see at the time.
Before that, most of my role models were action heroes: Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone.
Demolition Man, Judge Dredd, Total Recall, Men in Black, The Fifth Element — these films shaped my vision of the future.
I guess a child's mind doesn't draw a very clear line between fantasy and reality. These worlds felt less like fiction and more like a glimpse of what was waiting ahead.
It turned out differently.
Yet many years later, I'm still designing clothes for worlds that don't exist.
