Max and decided they couldn’t leave Big Island without seeing the summit of Mauna Kea. By bike. Yes, Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain on Earth measured from the ocean floor.

Is there a crazy idea out there that Max • Hamburg ⚓ and Rijke wouldn’t be up for?

Measured from the ocean floor, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on Earth. At 10,203 metres, it’s even taller than Mount Everest. The ride covers 4,200 metres of climbing in 90 km, and a third of it is on rough, rocky, unpaved tracks.

Weather and landscape change again and again on the long way up. Steep climbs through hot lava fields, sun and clouds, up to a summit that is usually clear, with temperatures just above freezing. On the final stretch of loose, coarse gravel, the thin air makes it even harder.

Enough to make most people think twice. We’re pretty confident Max & Rijke didn’t even think once.

We joined them on their wild trip and had Max test a new prototype of our cycling suit.

Kona didn’t go the way any of us had hoped, Lucy Charles-Barclay. We know how much work, belief and heart went into this race, because we saw it every single day.

Thank you for your honesty. It takes real strength to say “I still don’t know what happened (…) I’m not fine yet“ in a world that expects athletes to always bounce back, and to have an explanation and a solution ready for every setback.
