Can Versatility Be A Niche?

“Pick a niche and stick to it.”
Apparently, I missed that meeting. 😂

Because at T.A.T Creations…
I make children’s clothes. I make women’s clothes. I make men’s clothes.
Ready-to-wear? Yes. Bespoke? Yes. Made-to-measure? Absolutely. Alterations? Bring it. ✂️
And according to a lot of business advice, I’m doing it WRONG.

We’re constantly told:
“You can’t serve everybody.” “Choose one thing.” “Niche down.” “People need to know exactly what you’re known for.”
And I understand the logic.

But here’s where I disagree…
Why should a designer who has developed the skills to create across different categories deliberately restrict his/herself simply because the internet says he/she needs a niche?🤷‍♀️

Maybe my niche isn’t women’s wear.
Maybe it isn’t kidswear.
Maybe it isn’t menswear.
Maybe my niche is simply:

Making clothes for REAL PEOPLE.
☑️ The woman who wants a beautiful dress.
☑️ The man who wants an Ankara shirt that actually fits properly.
☑️ The mother looking for something special for her child.
☑️ The client who bought something they love but needs it altered to fit.

Different people. Different needs. Same sewing room. 🧵✂️

Does that mean I’ll never specialise further? Of course not.
But right now, I refuse to pretend I can only do ONE thing just because “niching down” sounds good in a business book.

So, fashion designers and business owners…
🔥 Is doing too many things bad business?
Or…
🔥 Can versatility itself be your niche?
And current and potential customers would you rather go to a designer who specialises in ONE thing, or someone you trust who can sew for your whole family?

One of my favourite parts of fashion design is looking at a piece of fabric and imagining what it could become.

For this concept, I wanted the beautiful black, gold and white print to remain the statement while giving the dress a sophisticated, structured finish.

So I paired it with:
✂️ A structured fitted black bodice 🧵 A hand-twisted asymmetric neckline ✨ A dramatic layered high-low ruffle skirt 🤎 A gold back zipper for an elevated finishing touch 🎨 A timeless black, gold and white colour palette.
