Sie ist eine kleine, tragbare Version der sogenannten Säulensonnenuhr, die vom Mönch Hermann von Reichenau (1013–1054) entwickelt wurde. Wie der Name schon sagt, wurde sie oft von Hirten getragen - gefertigt aus schlichten Materialien wie Holz oder Knochen. Die Hirtenuhr, die wir dir hier zeigen, besteht aus 925er Sterling Silber.
Und so gehts: Drehe den waagerechten Arm auf den aktuellen Monat. (zB. J für Januar). Sonnenuhren wie diese sind stets für eine feste geografische Breite optimiert – im Fall dieser Hirtenuhr liegt sie bei ca. 48–50° Nord (Mitteleuropa). Die Uhr dann in Sonnenrichtung ausrichten. Die Spitze des Schattens zeigt dir dann auf der nächsten eingravierten Kurve, die zu den Stundenzahlen führt, die WOZ (die wahre Ortszeit) an - die Morgenstunden rechts, Nachmittagsstunden links.

(EN) A piece of jewelry with a history: The Shepherd’s Sundial!
It is a small, portable version of the so-called column sundial, which was developed by the monk Hermann of Reichenau (1013–1054). As the name suggests, it was often carried by shepherds—made from simple materials such as wood or bone. The shepherd’s sundial we’re showing you here, however, is made of 925 sterling silver.
So how does this little gem work? T turn the horizontal arm of the cross to the corresponding month (for example J for January). Column sundials like this one are always optimized for a specific latitude—in the case of this shepherd’s sundial, it’s approximately 48–50° North (Central Europe). Then turn the the clock towards the sun. The tip of the shadow will then point to the WOZ (true local time) on the next engraved curve leading to the hour markings—morning hours on the right, afternoon hours on the left.
