“The details are not the details. They make the design.”

When I look back on a project, I rarely see only the finished garment.

I see the fabrics, the lines, the sketches, the small adjustments — and all the decisions that quietly disappear into the finished piece.

Charles Eames is credited with the words:
“The details are not the details. They make the design.”

And when a design comes together with the personality and presence of the person it was created for, it becomes the art of tailoring at its finest.

From Idea to Stage ✨

EN From Idea to Stage

In 2023, I had the pleasure of developing a new stage outfit for the Leipzig-based Calmus Ensemble together with the singers.

The idea was to create a look that feels cohesive as a group, while still leaving room for the personality and individuality of each ensemble member.

For the women, I designed two different dresses that share the same visual language while each having their own character. The men’s looks complement them through carefully chosen accessories.

Versatility was another key part of the concept. With just a few changes, the outfits can take on completely different looks: the dresses can be styled with two different belts, while the men can switch between different neck accessories depending on the occasion. Reversible pocket squares add another playful detail — one side shimmers in gold, the other features a blue-and-gold stripe.

The result is a flexible set of ensemble outfits made up of individual pieces that can be mixed, matched and restyled, creating new looks and moods on stage. 🎶

Swipe through the slides to take a closer look at the ideas and details behind the concept.

"Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself." — Coco Chanel

Beauty and elegance are a dialogue between what is within and what is seen.

A garment does not turn you into someone else. But it can reveal what makes you unique and give you a language to express yourself — as a person and as an artist.

At Marillon Couture, our purpose is to accompany and support exactly this process through bespoke stagewear.

We create garments that do not disguise, but reflect personality; garments that adapt to your expression, your movement, and your artistic intention, becoming a natural part of you on stage.

Music connects people. What a wonderful way to conclude the 75th ARD Int. Music Competition , with the final prizewinners’ concert last Friday in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz.

On Friday afternoon, I already had the opportunity to meet with the Viatores Quartet the winners of our special prize, for an initial exchange of ideas. Later that evening, I was delighted to personally present them with the special prize at the reception in the Allerheiligen Hofkirche. So, our shared journey towards new concert attire has begun.

A particularly special moment was the brief musical greeting from the three prizewinners in the bassoon category:
Enrico Bassi
Jappe Dendievel
Laure THOMAS
With the words, “Fourteen days ago, each of us began this competition individually, and now we would like to bring it to an end together,” they once again captured the spirit of the competition—in music and in words. Because alongside all the competition for the coveted prizes, it is also the shared experience and the opportunity to create and share special musical moments that make a competition like this truly unforgettable.

So, thank you to all the musicians for your music, to all the jury members for their commitment and dedication to fair assessments, and, of course, a very special thank you to the entire team around and Elisabeth Kozik, who make this competition possible in the first place and shape it into what it is.

Our previous prize winners:

Of course, it is only a small part of a much bigger journey, but we are happy to be part of it.

EN 🎙️ CLOSET CONFESSIONS No.1: How much drumming can a suit take?

For the first episode of Closet Confessions, I took a look inside the concert wardrobe of percussionist Martin Grubinger: What does a stage outfit have to go through?  How does clothing affect your stage presence? And what do you do when your shoes suddenly turn the stage into an ice rink? 👀

A conversation about outfits, confidence, and a young generation of musicians currently taking part in the ARD International Music Competition in Munich.

Tomorrow, you can catch the percussion final at the Herkulessaal in the Munich Residenz – with Martin Grubinger as chair of the jury.

Tailor’s Note #4 — Can clothes change the way we play?

I believe stagewear has no direct influence on the way we play. But clothes do influence the way we carry ourselves — and how we see ourselves.

That’s true for everyone, but I feel it particularly strongly when working with musicians. At a competition like the ARD Int. Music Competition , where every Detail ist under such close attetion, that feeling can be even stronger. You stand there as both an artist and a person, and in that moment, a feeling of security matters.

The right clothes can be part of that feeling. They can give you a sense of being comfortable, protected and fully yourself — without taking anything away from the vulnerability of performing.

I love giving a musician that feeling through something I’ve made for them.
