Fashion Revolution Week 2024 is upon us, and besides hosting Eva for her leather workshop, I'll be offering a class on upcycling sewing projects again! The description thereby naturally will be in German. 😅

„Upcycling“, „Urban Mining“ und andere “Buzz-Words“ sind in aller Munde, doch was kann ich persönlich tun, um Ressourcen und vielleicht auch meinen Geldbeutel zu schonen?

Gerade im Bereich der Textilwirtschaft und beim Nähen fristet das Wiederverwerten von Mterial ein Nischendasein. Selber Nähen mit gekauften Stoffen ist schon klasse, aber was, wenn man noch weiter gehen könnte und Stoffe, Schnallen undGurte selbst „gewinnt“? Das und mehr lernt ihr in meinem Workshop, in dem wir einen einfachen Beutel nähen werden, der komplett aus von euch recycelten Materialien bestehen wird. Ihr seid auch herzlich eingeladen, ein eigenes Stück, z.B. ein Trikot, eine alte Hose, etc. mitzubringen, wenn ihr diesen ein zweites Leben schenken möchtet.

Why dies it surprise me?! Well, not only is Nick producing a very high-quality podcas, but his prior guests read like the who-is-who of sustainable fashion! Be it professors and boom authors or "Mr. Sustainable" himself, .raeburn

However I braved my fears and we had a lovely talk about upcycling in fashion in general, about my process of worm and about the "magic" of Instagram that brought him and me and other people together, even leading to me eventually meeting Chris and common friend in person.
_
Nick was one of the very first persons I met here on isntag and became friends with, leading to things like making him an elaborate Messenger Bag in 2019 which he described on an equally elaborate blog post article. That very Bag - shown in this post - even was incorporated into a local painting later on! 😀
_

Afte rather Urban DPM, here's another, even more fancy recolouration of an actual military pattern! In this case, it's a pinkish variation of modern British MTP.

The Veshmeshok itself doesn't need further introduction. It's a proven, age-old Russian/Soviet design and kind of a big brother to the ubiquitous drawstring bag.
_
British MTP being close (enough) in shape to the ubiquitous Multicam, it offers the endless options of trimmings that are offered in Multicam: You cant only get all kinds of fabrics or webbing in MC, but also webbing, elastics, Velcro and even binding tape. I thus combined the Cotton Candy MTP with webbing and Velcro in Multicam and lined in in Cordura in that pattern, creating a cool contrast. This Veshmeshok is of the standard wide version, and it has an exterior pocket closed with Velcro. There's some Velcor for a name tape and a small swatch for patches. The reinforcment at the bottom is made from the same Cordura it is lined in. The adjustable carrying-sling and all four external straps are made from red 1 In wide webbing equipped with pink hardware.

A topic that always fascinated me is commercial recolourations of military camouflage patterns. Here's one example with his one having been made in an urban colouration of the venerable British DPM pattern. I found it on Spoonflower (the guys with the ridiculous shipping) and had it printed on a denim fabric. This Veshmeshok is of the slim version and has an external pocket closed with two zippers for easy access from either side. The reinforcment at the bottom is made from grey offcuts from a curtain with the lining being the same material. The adjustable carrying-sling is made from grey 1 In wide webbing NOS from former East German Army stocks.

Here's two of the Veshmeshoks of in "the" modern Russian pattern.

The Veshmeshok itself doesn't need further introduction. It's a proven, age old Russian/Soviet design and kind of a big brother to the ubiquitous drawstring bag.

These two were made in the modern EMR camouflage pattern, used by a lot of Russian forces and their proxies. The material was slavaged from an original Russian Army shelter half or tarp. Both Veshmeshoks have an exterior pocket. For the slim one, it's closed with two zippers. For the wide one, it comes closed with Velcro. There's some Velcor for a name tape and a larger swatch for patches. Both Veshmeshoks have been reinforced at the bottom and lined in slavaged OD dyed table cloth. All the webbing used is also original Russian production in EMR. There's the adjustable carrying sling as well as four small ones for external storage on the wider one.

On to another Messenger Bag in a modern commercial pattern! Commonly known as "Tundra," this Arktis proprietary pattern is mostly associated with French Special Forces and mountain units.

This Messenger Bag was mostly made from light uniform fabric in the aforementioned "Tundra" pattern but has been reinforced internally with recycled ad banner. On the front flap, there is a large piece of Velcro for patches that comes with a "blank" patch. For the latter or any spare patches, there's Velcro on the inside as well. On the covered front panel, there's a little pocket for pencils and my classic "Remove before..." patch. As per SOP, the carrying-sling is quickly adjustable and comes in white 2 In webbing and equipped with an Austri Alpin Cobra Buckle.
The external pouch on the rear is closed with a flap with Canadian buttons and intended for easy access to documents, a magazine, and something to read.
The bag is lined in a material fitting for mountaineers - the distinctive green Merino wool based material of Swedish Woolpower underwear! This brand has long been a staple for troops serving in Arctic conditions, and the label I included shows this set as having been issued under a contract for German Soecial Forces. The bag further comes with the usual amenities like a devider fitted with a small pocket and a key strap. On the front interior, there's another zippered pocket. Closure is provided by two MILSPEC snap Buckles.

Here's another pair of Veshmehsoks I made a while ago. This time, they are rather colourful! Despite usually working with camouflage patterns and vintage military, these Veshmeshoks are a good example of how I dip into more "civilian" styles now and then just as well. 🙃

These two were made from a wonderful "Bauhaus" inspired pattern, printed on heavy Denim. As usual, both have exterior pockets. One of the two has lining and webbing in contrasting red with the other one sporting the same in dark blue.

I've always had a weakness for the distinct aesthetics of defence industry advertising material. Especially that of the Cold War era was quite bold at times and used visually impressive designs.
_
Now you might wonder - as did I - whom is an advertisement for a main battle tank, a mine, a missile, or a nuclear submarine - all real examples aimed at? A hint is where such ads were placed; usually in magazines closely related to defence procurement and often published by Armies. Knowing how lengthy procurement processes often were and are I think such ads merely could spark an initial interest in a product at best.
_
This grouping here was made for Krauss Maffei that in its later incarnation of KMW still is one of the big players on the German defence market.
_
(1-3) These incredibly detailed prints on thick stone-paper are oart of a ledger of prints depicting vehicles made by KM and their predecessors like the PzKpfWg VI "Tiger".
_
(4) This nice poster of the "Gepard" SPAAG was glued to a thin plywood board, which was very, very common, especially when hung up in barracks back in the day.
_
(5) An equally treated poster of the "Wildcat" SPAAG concept.
_
(6-7) These are two shots of a memo-block handed out as promotional material.
_
(8) A rather direct sticker depicting a rather well-known MBT.
_
(9) Personally, I consider the popular Spielberger reference books PR for KM as he was a lead engineer there and always very favourably wrote about their vehicles.

(10) Finally, here's a modern patch worn by a KMW employee on deployment. Such deployments were common in support of Bundeswehr missions like ISAF in Afghanistan.

This one was made in the relativeöy modern US tricolor desert camouflage pattern, printed on a lightweight woven synthetic fabric. This Veshmeshok is of the standard wide version and has an exterior pocket closed with Velcro. There's some Velcor for a name tape and a small swatch for patches. The reinforcment at the bottom is made from a German Army ground sheet. The adjustable carrying-sling and all four external straps are made from olive green 1 In wide webbing that came NOS from a defunct manufacturer's stock.
The whole Veshemeshok further is lined in Olive Drab Cordura.

On to another Messenger Bag in a modern commercial pattern - the "snowfleck" version of German and Danish flecktarn patterns!

Closely resembling the ubiquitous German "Flecktarn" pattern or its Danish and other derivatives, this commercial version is more of a rare one. Made by companies by MMB, this white-dominant winter pattern nonetheless is worn by some military units, notably some French mountaineers.
This Messenger Bag was mostly made from material salvaged from a pair of field pants in ripstop fabric.
The bag was internally reinforced with recycled ad banner, and on the front flap, there is a large piece of Velcro for patches that comes with a "blank" patch. For the latter or any spare patches, there's Velcro on the inside as well. On the covered front panel, there's a little pocket for pencils and my classic "Remove before..." patch. As per SOP, the carrying-sling is quickly adjustable and comes in white 2 In webbing and equipped with an Austri Alpin Cobra Buckle.
The external pouch on the rear is closed with a flap with Canadian buttons and intended for easy access to documents, a magazine, and something to read.
The bag is lined in a slightly lighter version of the Danish K/84 pattern, and it comes with the usual amenities like a devider fitted with a small pocket and a key strap. On the front interior, there's another zippered pocket. Closure is provided by two of the beloved Austri Alpin Cobra Buckles.

This one was made in the modern Danish M/84 camouflage pattern, and in contrast to the previous example, this one was made from genuine surplus - a Danish Army shelter-half or tarp. This Veshmeshok is of the standard wide version and has an exterior pocket closed with Velcro. There's some Velcor for a name tape and a small swatch for patches. The reinforcment at the bottom is made from a commercial M/84 print on heavy Cordura. The adjustable carrying-sling and all four external straps are made from red 1 In wide webbing that was used in aircraft manufacturing - hence the repeating: "Pull Life Vest" print.
The whole Veshemeshok further is lined in red cotton fabric left from another project.
