The humble beginnings: In the spring of 1996, Kilian Stauss and Antonio Pedrazzini founded the »stauss pedrazzini partnership« as an interdisciplinary design studio and immediately travelled across the Alps to Milan to strengthen their contacts at the »Salone del Mobile« and the »Euroluce« trade fair. Looking at the work in detail, the transition phase between manual and computer-based work is evident: equipped with Apple 475 LCII computers, Sony Trinitron colour monitors (!), one of the first HP 850C colour inkjet printers and a UMAX Astra 600 scanner, we felt as though we had arrived in the future. 2D CAD data, plans and layouts were created on the computer, whilst renderings were still done by hand and then scanned. The internet was only just emerging; very few people had email, much communication was still actually carried out via fax and telephone, and photography was analogue. And, of course, through direct, face-to-face conversations: trade fairs were still important venues where the entire industry met on a regular basis. Smartphones weren’t even a concept yet. The methods, workflows, tools and processes in design have changed dramatically over the last 30 years.
