Traditional Japanese tattooing, or , has been intertwined with the yakuza since their inception. In the Edo period (1603 to 1868), criminals were tattooed by authorities in a practice known as , making it hard for them to reenter society and find work. The tattoo culture of the yakuza evolved in protest to this branding.⁠⠀

Watanabe Katsumi somehow managed to take portraits of its residents; the drag queens, bar hostesses, prostitutes and even a Yakuza gangster. ⁠⠀

He would walk around every day with his camera and cleverly wait for them to ask him to shoot their portrait. And many of them knew how to pose for the camera⁠⠀

In the 1950s, Tokyo had its own secret society for the growing cross-dressing community called the which was housed in secret apartments and offered a place for members to store their clothes and accessories away from their families.⁠⠀

It was also a safe circle in which less-experienced cross-dressing members could exchange clothes, make-up tips and generally find support amongst each other.⁠⠀

Back in the ’60s and ’70s, portrait photographer focused his lens on the nighttime inhabitants of , the red-light district of Shinjuku Tokyo. These subjects include prostitutes, cross-dressers and gang members, whom all agreed to pose for the photographer’s camera. ⁠⠀

He would then return the next evening and deliver prints to his subjects for a minimal amount of money...⁠⠀
