Sidekick Broadcast or Sidekick 3: how to tell which one you need.

Clothing rustle ruins more takes than you’d expect.
It usually comes down to how the mic sits against fabric.

Most people think foams are mainly for wind.
That’s not completely true.

Foam has two main jobs.

Stop plosives, minimize breath noise and protect your capsule against very light wind.

It’s open-cell foam: acoustically transparent, so it doesn’t change the sound of what you’re capturing.

Ours runs thicker on the sides, because that’s usually where the wind is actually coming from.

Once real wind shows up though, foam alone won’t save your microphone. That’s a windshield’s job.

What does your average workday look like?

Chris Breest, the founder of Plymouth Rock Recording., had a pretty interesting one on the documentary Instructions For Leaving Film : designing a workflow as unobtrusive as possible, so nothing in the room reminded people they were being filmed.

“At the end of the day, the mounting system did exactly what I needed it to do, it let me stop thinking about the lavs and focus on the storytelling. In a documentary where authenticity depends on people forgetting the production is even there, that’s exactly what you want from a concealment system.”
