سيريوس هو اسم نجم في السماء، يعود أصل الاسم إلى الحضارة اليونانية القديمة، ويعني "المُشرق" أو "المتوهج" لأنه ألمع نجم في السماء يمكن رؤيته من الأرض في الليل.
ويطلق عليه أيضًا "سوبدت" عند الفراعنة و عند ظهوره في سماء شهر يوليو بعد غياب فترة هو علامة علي بداية عام زراعي جديد و فيضان النيل ، و"الشعري اليمانية" في شبه الجزيرة العربية.
لذلك تم اختيار الاسم لأنه يربط بين حضارات العالم القدي
