𝐈𝐑𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐆𝐄 𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐅𝐈𝐓

Today I’m bringing you this kit for the Iron Age I made for Terra Carpetana :

— Wool Twill long-sleeved tunic inspired by the Thorsberg find.

— White linen undershirt

— Long linen trousers in undyed linen

A fantastic base for recreating an Iron Age man, which, with the right accessories, can complete any impression.

In this case, a warrior from the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, with his light weapons and jewellery items such as fibulae and pendants found in the area.

Do you want to take the step to recreate a barbarian? Or perhaps you’re a Roman who’s had enough of the cold on the limes?

Here you have few ideas 😏

𝐌𝐘 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍 𝐒𝐔𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐒

The subarmalis is one of the most coveted pieces of Roman armor, not only because of the unique touch it adds to any set of armor, but also because of its practicality.

Perhaps until now you’ve watched in horror as your lorica ruined your tunics, or endured the weight of the armor with discomfort. But, my friend, with a subarmalis, that’s all over.

Over the past few months, I’ve been working on improving some details of my subarmalis, and here’s the result: I’ve selected the top-quality materials and rethink the design and proportions.

But be warned, this isn’t for just anyone. Because maybe you’d rather just grab one right away. Rush out to buy a mass-produced one from the big stores, made with modern materials and a one-size-fits-all design.

Or maybe you’re the type who prefers something unique, that totally fits you with historical materials like wool or linen. With hand-sewn seams and all the details you’d like to include.

In other words, something tailor-made just for you.

The Romans' interest in keeping records and notes is well known. All kinds of writing implements, such as papyrus and wood tablets, have survived to this day. Perhaps the best known are the tabulae ceratae, made of wax and reusable.

However, documents need to be transported and kept safe from the weather and prying eyes. The Romans had already thought of this and had solutions:

This leather case was found at the Vindonissa site (Switzerland; Volken, M. & Volken, S., 2005) and, given its size, it is believed that it could well have been used to store several wax tablets.

Our reconstruction is made of goatskin and sewn with linen thread, as well as protected by a balm of olive oil and beeswax. It is a completely handmade, artisanal piece.

Scribes, beneficiarii and Romans concerned with taking note of everything. No more tablets lying around in backpacks or all over the camp.

🙌 And as I am quite happy with the result, I am giving this wax triptych and its brass stylus as a gift to the first person who asks for it.

A Roman citizen may have to dress in an immaculate toga on special occasions, but there are other situations where comfort is priority.

Lucius wanted to take a look at his properties, tabula in hand, and note which slaves were shirking their work.

This colourful outfit consists of:
⦁ Roman tunic
⦁ Sagum
⦁ Wool woven belt
⦁ Bronze fibula

Although most of my work is with plain fabrics, herringbone wool weave is one of my favourite textile patterns.

And, of course, you can request that your next tunic be made with this striking type of fabric, which has been documented throughout all the Iron Age.

Just tell me!

𝐀𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐬 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐲𝐬

I recently finished this Greek-style cloak (chlamys) made from 100% hand-woven wool cloth.

Its design is based on one of the most famous pieces of Hellenistic art: the frescoes in the tomb of Agios Athanasios (Thessaloniki). Judging by its profuse decoration and chosen theme, this tomb from the late 4th century BC belonged to an individual of high status.

In its iconographic depiction, we can see two phalangites (pezhetairoi) guarding the tomb door in a mournful attitude. Above them is a large scene depicting a symposium, with a jubilant equestrian procession and more soldiers standing guard and chatting animatedly.

It is noteworthy that all the soldiers wear the same chlamys in the same colour combination (gold and lilac). Could this be a common feature of Macedonian soldiers? Or perhaps a distinctive element of an elite group such as the agêma or the hetairoi?

What is certain is that this is one of the best references available for recreating a Macedonian soldier!

Today I bring you a garment with a more distinguished touch:
a wool tunic with clavi and a matching cloak.

As I have mentioned on other occasions, the choice of colours can completely transform the impression given by the figure represented.

In this case, we opted for a deep, intense blue combined with red clavi and a crimson cloak. These are striking colours, befitting someone of a certain status or wealth, ideal for conveying greater presence and style.

And best of all: you can get all this at a DISCOUNT on the website!👉 https://sagum-roparecreacionhistorica.com/roma/

𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍 𝐂𝐇𝐋𝐀𝐌𝐘𝐒

Although when we talk about Roman cloaks, the sagum or paenula always come to mind, there was always much more variety.

In the 3rd-5th centuries AD, a voluminous cloak known as a chlamys (in fact, the Greek term for cloak) became the fashion among the elite and the army.

Specifically, this type of chlamys was oval in shape and large in size, measuring around 3 x 2.5 metres. However, in order to cover the entire body, as we see in iconography, it needed to measure 3 x 3 metres, depending on the height of the wearer.

I must admit that this is my favourite garment from late Roman attire. Its length gives it a very regal appearance, ideal for roles that reflect your ‘dignitas’.

And what is a true advantage, it covers you completely and, being a double cloak, it is much warmer than a conventional cloak.

So, if you are reenacting the Late Roman Empire and you are:

⚔- A soldier
👌- An aristocrat
📜- An estate officer

You can also get your own chlamys!
