Niukka 20L and Lidded GP pocu 4x5

Our simple and handy Lidded GP 4x5 pouches are suited for carrying bulkier gear compared to the Zipped GP puoches with internal organizing options, and they can also be used to expand the carrying capacity e.g. of the Niukka 20L backpack.

Using the compression straps and G-hooks, a Lidded GP Pouch can be easily attached to the front of the pack. This provides additional external storage, while maintaining access to the main compartment.

For a day hike, the pouch is a practical place for items such as a Savotta Laavu tarp, a lightweight down jacket, or a camp stove if you prefer to keep it separate from the rest of your gear inside the pack. It is a simple way to increase the Niukka’s capacity when you need a bit of more room.

Laavu tarp setup

When you want good cover and a nearly unobstructed entrance, consider this simple setup trick: three corners staked to the ground, one corner standing with a pole which is secured to the ground with length of cord.

This setup gives you excellent cover and protection whilst keeping the front open. Works nearly anywhere, as long as you have one tree nearby and a suitable pole available.

The Laavu tarp has a square shape, 275 x 275 cm, with taped centre seam. A total of 17 tie-down loops (16 along the edges, one in the centre) allow for a variety of different pitching methods. A simple square tarp is probably the most universal and multifunctional type of personal shelter there is, not nearly as fancy as a tent but extremely versatile.

“Laavu” is Finnish for a lean-to type shelter, which has led to tarps being commonly called “laavukangas”, literally translated that would be “lean-to shelter fabric”. So as Finns we are our tarps are named Laavu!

How-to: Kahakka backpack harness attachment

We sell the Kahakka shoulder straps as a separate accessory kit, for use with the Hatka 12L daypack and Keikka series of duffle bags. These can of course be used with any other pack or bag out there, as long as it has suitable attachment points.

Attachment is easy. Loop the top webbing straps through the top D-rings and do a U-turn through the steel tri-glide buckle to lock them in place. The lower straps are even easier, push the loop end through the bottom D-rings, pull the opposite webbing end through the loop and thread it through the ladderlock buckle.

Jääkäri XL

The legend and the largest pack in the Jääkäri series. An external frame design for heavy and cumbersome loads, capacity approx. 70 litres, or 80 litres when fully overpacked. Do note that this is only the capacity of the pack itself, with added side pouches and a Hatka 12L quick-detach daypack you can bring the capacity up to 115-120 litres.

PALS webbing on the hip belt, sides, back, lid and bottom of the pack allow you to attach additional pouches and gear. This system offers numerous options for configuring the pack to suit your specific needs. Not only for pouches though, the PALS webbing can also be used to attach straps, elastic cord, carabiners etc.

The hip belt and shoulder harness can both be moved up and down the frame to properly fit 160-200 cm tall users. The external LJK tubular aluminium frame keeps the pack from sagging and transfers the pack weight onto your hips even when loaded down with heavy and cumbersome cargo.

The Jääkäri XL is available in green only.

The bellowed side pouches on the Kantamus 60L

The slightly bellowed side pouches allow you to carry long tools and such on the sides. These are relatively flat and low, not intended to carry water bottles or such, for that we recommend adding a GP pouch to the hip belt. However, if you prefer to keep a bottle there, opt for a low, kidney-shaped one rather than a tall model.

The backpack also has a hydration bladder compartment inside the main pack, with two tie-down loops and a hydration bladder attachment webbing tab on the top. Each side of the pack has one tube port.

Midsummer celebrations!

We’ll be off for an extended weekend, celebrating midsummer, burning bonfires and being eaten by mosquitoes. This means a short period of delays in order processing, customer support and all that.

So happy midsummer to all of you! We’ll be back and hard at work on Monday as usual.

Laavu tarp - setup

Fact: weird tarps are just weird, our Laavu tarp is not weird. Sensible, proven design: a 275 x 275 cm square with a total of 17 tie-down points (one in the centre) and that’s it! This gives you plenty of options for various setups, and enough room to comfortably fit up to two persons.

Tarps like this can be set up in numerous ways, some easier and simpler, some more convoluted. The good thing is that with a sensible design you have the option to set it up properly in various terrain, ensuring you have a decent shelter where ever you may need it.
