Who is the boy with the red hair?

Between 1950 - 1957 Joan Eardley worked in Townhead, Glasgow. Her sketches and paintings feature children from the neighbourhood, and have been praised for their honest portrayal of working-class life in the city.

We were delighted when Jim Samson got in touch with us recently to let us know that he was the subject for 'Boy’s Head: A Glasgow Boy'.

Jim was born into a family of twelve in Townhead and has since emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. The Samson children appear in several of Eardley's works. He recalls going to her studio on St James’s Street:

‘You would go up the stairs to the top floor and then walk in the door and down a couple of steps. Along the left side were all sorts of canvases and things and there was a pot belly stove and a bed. It was always nice and warm in there. I confess that partly why we went there was that she would give you a sandwich or something. That was a big thing in Townhead.’

Today would've been Joan Eardley's 101st birthday. Our free display 'Joan Eardley & Catterline' is on at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art until Sunday 21st August 2022.
