Where are all my sewers at? One of the things that I intend on making time for this year is sewing. I’m always collecting vintage patterns and thought that I share these French ones that I found at one of the brocantes. I also keep an eye out for vintage fabrics as well. I’ll share some close ups of the patterns in the stories and then all I have to do is find the time. Is there anything that you would like to more of if you have the time this year?

So, it’s been a moment since I’ve done a and since it was just Paris Couture Week it got me wondering about people of color in the couture scene and I came across the fantastic Dorothea Towles Church who is noted for being the first black model to gain success in the 1950’s Paris Couture scene.
Dorothea was born in Texas in 1922. She studied and received a bachelor degree in biology and pre-med. After the death of her mother she moved to LA to stay with her uncle and his family where she worked a number of different jobs before becoming a teacher. While teaching she also studied drama, speech and modelling.
After appearing in a number of charity fashion shows she took a two month European vacation with her husband. Taking the opportunity of being in Paris Dorothea tried out for modelling jobs, one being for Christian Dior who hired her immediately. Dorothea told her husband she was staying in Paris and spent the next five years modelling for the likes of Dior, Schiaparelli, Piguet and Balmain to name a few. At the time she is claimed to have been the only black model in Europe.
While in Paris Dorothea had collected a spectacular couture wardrobe which she used to create her own tour of Black universities around America.
She continued to model and work within the modelling industry on her return to America but did not find the success she had in Paris and Europe.
Dorothea died in 2006 but continues to be a legend.

Well hi there for a brand new year.

I’ve got to say I’m looking forward to 2023 and leaving a very complex 2022 behind.
I showed up a lot less here than I wanted to last year but as things are settling down I’m hoping to be a lot more present this year.

I wanted to just say a big thank you for sticking with me, checking up on me and shopping last year its meant a lot more than you could possibly know.
I have new old items that I didn’t get chance to add to the collections last year like this gorgeous bag above. All new pieces will be available on and after the sales which in France is a legal requirement that retailers have to take part in the two major sales of the year which start this Wednesday.

I’m looking forward to spending more time with you this year and sending you all love for 2023
