Sometimes, a small figure picked up in a French brocante says just as much about France as anything hanging in a museum.

That’s what I love about wandering markets and antique shops.

You never know what will find you.

And often, it’s the most unexpected pieces that become favourites.

This little Pierrot Gourmand display once sat in a French sweet shop, quietly encouraging people to step inside for a lollipop or a treat.

Today, it has a different job.

It simply makes people smile.

Not every painting I bring home needs to be by a famous artist.

I’m drawn to the ones that capture a feeling.

The quiet of a river at first light.

An autumn valley viewed from above.

The warm glow of Provençal stone.

A hidden cottage nestled among the trees.

Each painting was discovered here in France, chosen not because it matched the others, but because together they tell the story of the landscapes that continue to inspire me.

Some objects don’t need to be restored.

They need to be understood.

This old children’s horse had already lived a full life. Time had taken the horsehair, leaving only the burlap beneath.

Rather than erase that history, I chose to build from it.

An iron crown.

A faded ribbon.

A little imagination.

Not to make it new…

but to let its story continue.

Suspended in balance, one side holds a bundle of forgotten French books.

The other, a devotional figure.

One speaks through knowledge.

The other through faith.

Neither exists to diminish the other.

Hand-carved generations ago, they’ve witnessed centuries of quiet evenings, changing homes, and the gentle passage of time.

Today, the gilding is softer, the paint more worn, but the craftsmanship remains.

These aren’t just decorative objects—they’re pieces of history, ready to become part of another home.

I found this portrait in a brocante in the south of France and couldn’t leave it behind.

I didn’t know the artist. I simply loved the painting.

So I did a little searching… and eventually found her.

She replied almost immediately:

“Of course I remember it. It’s mine.”

She told me she painted it in 2013, that it had been part of an exhibition, and even offered to send me a certificate of authenticity.

Moments like these are why I love collecting.

Every object has a story. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, the artist is still there to tell it.
