Style it the way you want ♥️

Our boleros are patiently handcrafted by very talented artisans, mixing influences and textile heritage from around the world.
Handweaved cotton from Mexico, ikat silk from Uzbekistan, upcycled fabric details (all vintage or from haute couture deadstock), and assembled by hand in one of our two partner ateliers in París and Bucarest.

When I imagined this jacket I thought first of North Indian Rabari blouses with their intricate patchwork and chest pieces. Traditional blouses from a village in Oaxaca, Mexico called Santa Maria Tlahuiltoltepec also have a similar structure.
For the sleeves I took inspiration from traditional Tibetan Coats. These beauties are works of art and I’ve never seen a garment made to protect from the cold look so regal.
The structure of the jacket comes mainly from vintage Guatemalan men’s jackets that have that very fitted style as well as vintage Austrian hunting jackets for the scrunched shoulder.

So when you’re wearing one of our boleros you’re not wearing just any jacket. They’re an homage to ancestral craftsmanship, a cultural crossroad of woven stories made with much, much love.

Swipe to see some of our inspiration
1. Blouse from Santa Maria Tlahuiltoltepec Oaxaca, Mexico
2. Mayan men in Guatemala by David Alan Harvey, 1975
3. Traditional Rabari Jacket
4. Tyrollean velvet jacket from western Austria
5. Tibetan woman in sheepskin coat
6. Tibetan man in traditional coat

Ancestral stories and traditions coming together through woven treasures.
I am always in awe when one of our pieces comes out of the atelier and seeing how perfectly the Mexican and Uzbek textiles blend together. It’s actually quite impressive and also heartwarming imagining two women weaving in two different continents, each telling their story and sharing their heritage as if they were sitting side by side.
Definitely one of the main reasons that drove me to leave my corporate job and pour my heart and soul into Maison Mitla 💜🧿

The Panna Meena Ka Kund by ♥️

Built in the 16th century in Jaipur, India, during the reign of the Maharaja Jai Singh, this mesmerizing architectural masterpiece is actually a well.
Its purpose was to collect monsoon rainwater and save it for the drier months.
It was also used as a bathing pool and as a place for social meetings, mostly by women who would gather there and chit chat sitting next to the cool waters.
The geometrical perfection of this structure serves once more as testimony of what mankind can do when we focus on creating instead of destroying 🪬

Happy new year dear Maison Mitla community!

I’m not that much into the “new year, new me” thing as I think we’re a continuous work in progress. But the beginning of another year does bring the opportunity to review our emotions and reactions to what we’ve lived so far and set out with a clearer mind.

The past month has been a whirlwind of tough moments and not so happy news on a personal level. I took some time off to structure myself, my company, my other job (I’m also a Pilates instructor) and our family projects.

I felt like the end of the year was just a very confusing period of doing too much and maybe not in the right way. I’ve decided to take things a bit more slowly now and focus on my missions one by one.

So I wish you a very blissful beginning of 2024. Wherever you are, may you feel rested, energised, focused, ready to let go of whatever you cannot change and open to take in all that nourishes your soul.

From freezing Paris, much much love!

Gabriela

📸 throwback to hiking up Monkey Mountain in my Mexican hometown. Nature is definitely where I thrive (despite looking all stiff here because of how scared I was of sitting so close to the edge!)

Strutting into the holidays like a happy lama! ♥️

Wishing all those who celebrate a happy holiday season. Amidst the rush of parties, meal prepping, gift buying and wrapping, family interactions, and all the adrenaline the holidays bring sometimes, may you still enjoy the blessing of being surrounded by your loved ones.
May you get the blessing of having delicious food on your table.
May you get the blessing of making a child laugh and witness the amazement in their eyes with the holiday traditions.
May you get to hug the people you care for many many times.
December is always an emotionally charged and overwhelming month for me so after an extremely hectic beginning, I’ve decided to spend the next two weeks as one happy lama and take things slowly, step by step, getting my focus back to prepare for a wonderful 2024.
And from the bottom of my heart I wish you all the same ♥️

(Can’t remember the photo creds! Saved this image a long time ago. I think it’s a lama sanctuary somewhere in the Alps, so if you know the exact name please let me know!)

Running a fashion label is very much the opposite of what people think, especially if you’re doing things in a “sustainable” or just humanly decent way.

When striving to create a brand that has ethics and transparency, you quickly encounter many setbacks due to our globalised vision of fashion, and you often end up asking yourself, should I surrender and do things the way society dictates or should I persevere and try to do things differently?

From ateliers refusing to work with us because handmade textiles have to be cut by hand (and not machines). From bigger brands asking for collabs just to greenwash their image while demanding impossible deadlines and conditions for us to meet. Resellers willing to purchase well known designers at very high prices but asking small brands to lend them their stock in consignment instead, I mean it’s endless.

But on the other hand, there are amazing, incredibly uplifting aspects of running a label like ours.

There is the immense pleasure of working directly with so many talented people, the pride in seeing woven fabrics made with so much love by incredible ladies worn by other women accros the globe, getting to know other independent labels and discovering there are many of us out here offering a different vision of fashion, the satisfaction of understanding how clothes are made (thus being able to evaluate the real cost of what I see in stores both materially speaking and socially).

So yes, it’s a longterm constant effort. But by frequently questioning ourselves on how to do better and thanks to people like you who believe in us, our journey can continue ♥️

Maison Mitla is handcrafted up to the smallest details!

Now with every purchase you’ll get a beautiful postcard made by artist ♥️

And I’m going to repeat the same thing I said on first post about my collab with Ruth, not because I’m lazy but because I think it sums up pretty what we were going for :

Ruth is an extremely talented Mexican artist living in Paris who manages to capture the essence of Mexico through a very contemporary yet historically rich point of view.
All of her work is infused with color, life and fiery femininity.
From the very first time I saw her work I just knew I had to ask her to imagine something for MAISON MITLA because only someone like Ruth could capture our label’s cultural duality.

This is one of the two designs made by Ruth that will be printed on a postcard format for you to keep as a little souvenir of our world!

My slight obsession with doors and I think I’m not the only one…

Why is it that when we travel we take so many pictures of doors?
I mean there’s the tangible fact that some doors are just actual works of art and aesthetically beautiful.
But could there be a more subconscious reason? Are we maybe just curious to see what’s behind that door? Imagining entire scenarios, lives and stories.

Random thoughts…

Happy Monday!

Artisan Zenaida with her grand daughter Melani

I loved their smiles and laughter, I loved being able to see them together, much like when I gravitated around my grandma when she was in the kitchen cooking.
Maternal lineage is really important I think, as mothers are the safe keepers of knowledge, traditions and family memories. Zenaida learned the art of weaving from her mother and passed it on to her daughters, and little Melani will most probably do the same when she’s older.
Only they know the secrets of the loom. There are no digital design programs, no pdf patterns, no graphic designers. It is all in their minds and hearts and if it were not for women like Doña Zenaida and her lineage, all of this could be lost.

And remember you can shop traditional handmade huipil dresses and blouses directly on their account ♥️
