Behind the scenes of filming content as a small business owner lighting setup, camera equipment, tripods, and the reality of trying to get decent footage.
What looks like a simple clip actually involves a full DIY filming setup: studio lights, overhead rig, tripod mounted to cupboards, and a makeshift workspace just to get clean lighting and usable video. This is the side of content creation people don’t usually see the setup, the adjustments, and the constant tweaking to get the shot right.
This video shows the reality of behind-the-scenes filming, including lighting setups for small creators, camera positioning, home studio setups, and how much effort goes into basic content production.
Also features a solid brain fart moment where I completely forget the name of an extractor fan which pretty much sums up the mental state mid-filming.
If you’re into content creation, videography, DIY filming setups, or just curious about how small brands create their content, this is a pretty accurate look behind the curtain.

why does introducing yourself as a “rope recycler” feel like that scene 💀
hi, my name’s george… and I turn old climbing rope into products 😅
but yeah this is what I actually do:
sewing, prototyping, cutting, rebuilding materials that would’ve gone to landfill ♻️
turning climbing rope waste, plastic waste, and discarded materials into belts, keychains, and everyday gear for climbers, hikers, and people who care about sustainability
it’s messy, it’s experimental, and sometimes it feels a bit stupid saying it out loud… but it works

Standing on plastic to press it flat wasn’t exactly the plan… but when the clamp breaks, you improvise.

This clip is me literally standing on two boards to squash melted HDPE together. It works in a pinch, but it’s not the proper way to do it.
The correct process is pretty simple:
Melt the HDPE, sandwich it between two flat pieces of wood, and then compress it using a vice or strong clamps so the plastic spreads evenly and cures into a flat sheet.
Still, accidents sometimes lead to interesting results. The marbling on this piece actually turned out pretty nice. What surprised me most is how the colours blended. Instead of clean red and white lines, the plastics mixed together and created areas of pink alongside the white, so the pattern ended up softer than expected.
This is still very much the experimenting and prototyping stage, but it’s interesting to see what waste plastic can turn into.
If you’re into recycling, making things, climbing gear, or turning waste materials into new products, keep following along. There’s a lot more testing to come.

Well… that was my only plastic clamp
I’ve been experimenting with melting and compressing plastic waste to see if it can be reused for new products. The idea is simple: take waste plastic, clamp it together, and turn it into something useful instead of letting it end up in landfill.

So yeah… I now have zero clamps left.
If anyone out there happens to have a spare clamp lying around and wants to donate it to science (or at least to my very questionable recycling experiments), it would be greatly appreciated.

On a serious note, this is all part of trying to figure out ways to reuse plastic waste, experiment with recycling methods, and prototype new materials.
More experiments coming soon… once I obtain another clamp.

Came across a really interesting idea recently from Alex Hormozi about why entrepreneurship feels so different from other challenges.
It got me thinking about how a lot of people building things whether that’s business owners, makers, creatives, DIY builders, founders, or people working on passion projects are often operating without a clear roadmap. You're just figuring things out as you go.
I’ve started collecting quotes, ideas, and mental frameworks from people who’ve built serious businesses, just as a way to keep perspective when working on long-term projects.
A few friends of mine who run their own businesses have found it pretty useful as well, so I figured I’d start sharing some of them here.
If you're someone who enjoys building things, running a small business, making products, or working on creative projects, you might find some of these ideas interesting too.
If you want the document of quotes and mantras I’ve been collecting, just DM me or comment and I’ll send it over.

And if you like content around making things, building businesses, and the process behind it, feel free to follow along.

Bit of a late one… I probably should’ve done this last week 😅
But as a wee thank you for all the orders that have come in over the past couple of weeks, every order placed over the next 7 days will come with a free climbing rope keychain.
Just a small extra from us to say thanks for supporting a small business and helping give retired climbing rope a second life.
If you’ve been thinking about picking something up whether it’s a belt, bracelet, or gift now’s a good time.
With Mother’s Day coming up, these make great little presents for anyone who loves the outdoors, climbing, hiking, or handmade gear with a story behind it.

Thanks again for all the support recently. It honestly means a lot.

First HDPE prototype… and honestly, it’s ugly. But that’s kind of the point.
We’ve started experimenting with recycling HDPE plastic the same plastic used in milk bottles, shampoo bottles, detergent containers and milk bottle caps to see if we can turn everyday waste into durable new products for FORMA...

HDPE (recycling code #2) is one of the most widely recycled plastics and can be melted and remoulded into new items because it softens around ~120–130°C

So this is the very first test.
Not pretty.
Not perfect.
But it’s the start of something interesting.

The idea is simple:
Take waste plastic from everyday life and turn it into useful outdoor gear and accessories alongside the climbing rope products you already know.

Milk bottle lids.

Old shampoo bottles.

Cleaning containers.

Instead of landfill → new products.

If this works, it opens up a whole new direction for FORMA and pushes the whole circular gear concept further.

If you’re into climbing, hiking, gear making, sustainability, DIY recycling or circular design, keep an eye on this.

More experiments coming soon.

Comment if you’ve ever melted plastic at home.

POV: turning retired climbing rope into a handmade belt.
This is a captioned and voiceover timelapse showing the process from waste rope to finished product. I’m always trying to find better ways to reuse old climbing rope and turn it into something practical, durable, and actually worth keeping. If you’re into climbing, hiking, outdoor gear, upcycling, handmade products, or just satisfying videos of people making things, this one’s for you.
Made from retired climbing rope. Built by hand. Given a second life.

Part 3 of the cup cozy prototype series.
After a lot of testing, failed versions, and messing around with different ways of shaping the rope, I think I’ve finally landed on the final setup for these climbing rope cup cozies.
These are made from retired climbing rope that would normally get thrown out, so the goal has always been simple: take waste rope from the climbing community and turn it into something useful you can use every day.
This version finally has the right structure, the right feel in the hand, and actually holds the cup properly. Still a bit of refining to do, but we’re getting close.
If you’ve been following the prototypes from the start, I’m curious what you think about this version.

New stockist announcement: you can now find FORMA products at Scotland’s Bothy.
It’s a brilliant independent shop packed with interesting Scottish goods and genuinely well-curated items. If you’re around Aberdeen, it’s well worth a visit.
They’re also the first shop to stock the new climbing-rope cup cozies. A lot of people have been asking about these after the recent videos, so a small batch of the very first ones ever made has gone straight into the shop.
The cup cozies will be live on the website in about a week, but if you’re keen to get one early there are a few available right now at Scotland’s Bothy.
First come first serve!
If you’re into climbing, hiking, rope gear, outdoor culture, and handmade upcycled products, go have a look. Supporting local shops and local makers keeps projects like this going!
Love and appreciate you all!

Turning retired climbing rope into something useful.

So this is the second or third iteration of me playing around with rope in this way and I'd love to hear people's thoughts on whether they like this kind of project, whether they would buy this kind of thing. What they think about products made out of the physical rope as opposed to rope being stripped etc etc.

It’s a simple small rope cup cozy a cool way to keep a drink cold while giving old rope a second life. The video is a timelapse of the process: shaping the rope, gluing the coils together, and forming the final piece.
If you work with rope, climb, hike, arbor, or spend time around outdoor gear, you’ll know how tough and durable this material is. Instead of sending it to landfill, I’ve been experimenting with ways to reuse climbing rope offcuts and turn them into functional everyday objects.
These kinds of projects are a mix of DIY craft, upcycling, and outdoor gear shenanigans taking materials climbers trust on the wall and turning them into handmade products off the wall It's honestly pretty fun.

If you enjoy craft timelapses, rope work, gear builds, and upcycling projects, this one’s for you.
