Just over a week ago, Baba Yummy opened its doors in Aberystwyth — the first Ukrainian cafe in small seaside town in Wales.
For me, this was a very special project. At the beginning of February, Dmytro, a member of our Ukrainian community, approached me and asked for help with the interior design of a cafe he was planning to open. When I learned that it was going to be a Ukrainian cafe, I agreed without hesitation.
It was about more than just design. Living far from home, I believe it is important not only to preserve our culture for ourselves but also to make it visible to the people around us and share our traditions. Food is a very important part of culture, and often it is through food that people get to know a country best.
Over the course of four months, we worked together to create this space. I developed the interior concept and colour palette, selected furniture, lighting and decorative details, designed the logo, painted a mural, created a hand-lettered information board and even the sign for the door.
They were four very busy months. We had plenty of discussions, occasional disagreements, made mistakes, and sometimes completely changed our minds halfway through the process. There were some amusing moments too. On one occasion, I misjudged the size of the light fittings so badly that, when they arrived, it became obvious they would have been perfect for a castle with five-metre-high ceilings — but certainly not for our cafe. For a while afterwards, Dmytro enjoyed teasing me with collages featuring enormous light fittings next to tiny everyday objects.

My aim was to create a warm and welcoming space with a subtle Ukrainian character — a place where Ukrainians could meet, celebrate important occasions and feel a little closer to home. At the same time, I wanted it to tell local people something about Ukraine.

And the food is genuinely delicious. The head chef is the family's grandmother, so the food at Baba Yummy really does taste like home.
And if you stop by for a coffee or lunch, you can also see the mural and a small exhibition of my paintings, which currently decorate one of the cafe walls.

Where are you from, black flock of birds?

🇬🇧 Where are you from, black flock of birds?
Oil on canvas, gold leaf. Size 610 × 910 mm, 2025. Finished just a few hours ago.

This work is again about loss.
About the loss of home, of a past life.
About people who, without their own home, are like birds, forced to become migratory.
About my own experience and my personal trauma.
Of course, the work strongly echoes the poem by Serhiy Zhadan “Where are you from, black caravan, flock of birds?”, written about the experience of people from Luhansk, Donetsk, and Crimea — a poem I have known well for many years.
Today, this “black flock of birds” is incomparably larger.
The river symbolises the division of life into two parts.
The past has remained there, beyond the river; it has ended and no longer exists.
The future is unknown; it does not exist either.
There is only now - a temporary pause and, if one is lucky, a place to rest and reflect on loss.
Together with all of us, Saint Christopher carrying the Child crosses this river, saving the future itself.

🇬🇧They Arrived. With their Stars and Shadows.
Watercolour and gold leaf, 45×45 cm.
About us, Ukrainian migrants and refugees. We stand at the door (Strata Florida Abbey) like traditional kolyadnyky (Christmas carolers), waiting to be invited in. With our angels and demons, with all the good and bad we carry.
Created under the impression of last year’s kolyada performance for the local audience in Wales.

The Creation of the World,
Oil on canvas with gold leaf, 2025

Every child brings a unique cosmos into being - full of wonder and endless possibilities. Each life lived is a world, and every life lost is a world that never fully unfolded.
This painting reflects the emergence of order from chaos, blending personal vision, and mythological ideas.
This work will be exhibited for the first time at Boundaries, MoMA Machynlleth, Wales, February 2026.

Merry Christmas to everyone!
These are the puppets made by the children and young people of the Ukrainian Club “Prosvita” in Aberystwyth, Wales, under my guidance. We performed a Ukrainian koliada for the local audience this year using these very puppets.

🇬🇧Today I’m sharing the second illustration for book project — this time for an Afghan legend, Let’s Go to the Mazar.
This story is closely connected to a song of the same name, which was most likely created long before the legend itself. In the story, the heroine sings this song — and it feels as if the legend grew out of the music.
I learned this legend from my friend Yasin. Sadly, he and his family have since moved away, and I miss him and his wife very much. It’s hard when such kind, interesting people leave.
The girl in this illustration also reminds me a little of Kobra, Yasin’s wife. She was very much in my thoughts while I was drawing her.

Let’s Go to the Mazar».
