AHH the few weeks before your baby turns one.
This I can say has been the hardest most challenging year.
At 3 months old Harvey was fitted with a Ng feeding tube due to a virus called cmv which affected his ability to feed. At the time he was already small and not gaining weight. This was heartbreaking as a mum who adored my breastfeeding journeys I felt like my body was failing him and it was a hard pill to swallow. Despite this I continued to pump and feed Harvey through his Ng using high calorie fortifiers to help build up his strength. At 6 months old we finally were able to get back to partial breastfeeding while using our Ng tube. Because of the cmv virus Harvey will need regular hearing exams to catch any potential hearing loss which the cmv is known to cause. Because my children are genetically small the Ng was essential to helping Harvey reach where he was supposed to be. At still below the charts we remain on our Ng but continue to follow our own wee curve as a healthy and happy just little baby boy. our hopes are high to have it removed very soon.
There is a bittersweet feeling about the first birthday as we all know as parents. For me This is a grief. I’m sad because this mattered so much to me. I wish things had been easier. medical monitoring, feeding difficulties,an NG tube, feeling like precious time was overshadowed by fear. But when you care so deeply the difficult parts leave a mark. So if your going through something similar just remember that mum who sat through appointments, worried about feeds, watched her baby need extra support—that mum did her very best for her baby to get to where they are today❤️
