✍️BEHIND THE TITLE: Why I called my new book, ‘You Don’t Need More Clothes’.

The title for my new style book has received some interesting reactions already 😃, so I’ve written about it.

Why it was chosen and what it really means.

I've recently started on TikTok (I'm at katieportmanwriter) so thought I may as well share my thoughts on here too...

However please let me know what you think - do you prefer photos and text or video content? x

If nobody gives your outfit a second glance, or a funny look, perhaps you’re not being brave enough with what you wear?

Let me explain…

One of the biggest reasons women play it safe with their style isn’t because they don’t necessarily know what suits them.

It’s because they don’t want to be judged.

So they tone themselves down and choose the safer outfit. The one that blends in and doesn’t attract a second glance.

But what if the occasional funny looks isn’t a sign you’re getting it wrong… what if it’s a sign that you’re finally dressing more like yourself?! ❤️

Because noticeable style isn’t about shocking people, it’s about having the courage to express who you are.

I’d love to know… because I’ve definitely done this myself… when was the last time you stopped yourself wearing something because you were worried about what others may have thought?

(I explore this idea in much more depth in my latest Substack essay if you’d like to read more. Just search for me, Katie Portman or go to the comments for the link.)

Some of the biggest breakthroughs in style happen when you let go of the myths you’ve been carrying around for years.

In this video, I’m sharing three of the ones I want you to let you go of today. Things that are simply not true.

I’d love to know - which of these three have you been believing?

Good news! From September, my styling diary will be fully open again for appointments.

Some of you will know that a while ago I made the decision to stop styling appointments for a short time.

It wasn't an easy decision to make but I really needed to stop, step back and reflect on where I was and what I was doing career / business wise as I felt completely lost. I also needed to get back to writing. (I'm not a happy Katie when I don't write.)

I then opened up my diary a little for some appointments, dividing my time between writing a book and working occasionally with clients. I was quite strict with the amount of work and clients I took on, mainly because I had to be due to personal reasons (the last 12 months have been particularly tough due to family losses) and because writing a book is a feat!

It's taken a while but I now feel like I'm back on track and so after achieving more of a balance between writing and styling, I've decided to open up my diary properly again from September.

I won't be working every day with clients, as my style book is coming out in September (which means life is going to get busy!) and I have other writing commitments too, but I will have much more availability than I have offered for a long time.

Plus, I've got some exciting ideas on how to make appointments hopefully even more meaningful and inspiring, which I can't wait to put into practice.

September has always been my second busiest month of the year, styling wise (January being the first) so if you would like to book in for an appointment, please bear that in mind, as they soon go.

Also, if you're a returning styling client, I'll happily offer you a 10% loyalty discount too, as a little thank you for sticking with me.

Ideal appointments to consider for September?

Well wardrobe edits and personal shops are always popular this time of year, mainly because it's got that new season / new school year vibe going on, so they are definitely worth considering.

As always though, consider what style support you think you might need and if you've got any questions, please do get in touch. I'm always happy to help or advise.

I know it's been a while, so here's a reminder of sessions and prices etc (just scroll to view more)

One of the most useful style questions you can ask yourself is this: what do I want my outfit to say about me?

Today’s answer for me was…

Soft. Romantic. A little bit bohemian.

The outfits I always feel the best in, aren’t the ones that meet trends, tick a box or follow rules. They’re the ones that feel most like ME.

Knowing yourself and wearing the pieces that speak to you is where personal style begins.

So tell me, because I’m always curious, what did you want your clothes to say about you today?! (Besides, help I’m melting! 🥵😂)

Some thoughts on dressing for this crazy UK heat! Firstly, I know so many of you hate wearing summer clothes in the UK so let me explain why I think this is...

In the UK, let's face it, our weather generally isn’t the warmest, so when the sun does shine like it is this week, it can feel REALLY strange to suddenly have to abandon our numerous layers of clothing and wear an awful lot less or bare some skin.

And I honestly think, this is why so many UK women dislike dressing for summer in the UK.

We're just not used to it, are we?

Having to suddenly dress for very hot temperatures, can make us feel a bit weird and uncomfortable, or possibly even a little anxious. It can bring out our insecurities or body image struggles.

So my advice is, try and dress as you would if you're on a summer holiday abroad, when you throw abandon to the wind.

As I often hear from clients, that they love doing this! With many even having a different 'holiday wardrobe'.

Wear those gorgeous holiday or summer clothes that rarely get an outing and please try not to worry about what you look like.

It's going to be super, super hot this week so you need to try and keep yourself super cool in whatever you wear.

So you do you but maybe...

Wear whatever tickles your fancy.

Dig out your shorts and show those legs!

Waft around in those colourful summer dresses that have been hiding in your wardrobe for too long.

And remember, we're all in the same boat here. We're all just trying to deal with the heat that we're not at all used to, feeling a little more self conscious and unsure about ourselves and our outfits than normal.

Let's try to enjoy dressing for the sun, whilst we can.

We’ll be back in our jumpers before we know it. 😉
