Nortier Shallow

Nortier Shallow Bespoke dressmakers of high end, couture gowns and alterations to wedding dresses. In August 2017 our first solo shop will launch in Basingstoke.

We met at Basingstoke College of Technology whilst studying for a diploma in Fashion design and construction. In our time there, we designed and made several different garments, including a 6 outfit collection exploring the idea of Male bridal wear. Soon after graduating, we started working with Brides of Odiahm, later Boo, under our original label, Bahbua. With the support of the founder and then

director, Barbara Ryder, we learnt the ropes and made small bespoke additions to the wedding dresses. In Spring 2014, Barbara retired and we took over all the alterations for Boo, which was now being run by Anna Johnson. A few months later, we signed the lease on a new shop in Hartley Wintney and opened in August 2014 as a joint venture. We have loved our time working with Boo and have expanded our bridesmaids' collections as well as our bespoke services. We work to turn your design ideas into a reality, ensuring that you are always happy with the fit and that all work is completed to the very highest standard.

Well hello there, it’s been a minute!

The wheels are still very much turning at Nortier Shallow HQ and we were very excited to find out we had be shortlisted as a Regional Finalist in The Wedding Industry Awards in the revived category of seamstress or tailor.

This is our first time in 12 years of being in bridal of entering any sort of awards and it’s been a really good exercise in examining our business and defining what we stand for within the bridal industry. It’s also a great excuse to get dressed up and network with industry peers!

The regional final is on November 27th so stay tuned to find out how we do. In the meantime, have a little peak at our sewing studio, where all the magic happens ✨

A huge thank you to all our brides who took the time to vote for us, it really means the world ❤️

We’re very sorry to hear of the passing of our neighbouring shop owner Jonathan Williams. Always a pleasant guy who would say hello whenever we saw him. We will really miss seeing him about Essex Road 😢

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

As a couple who have been engaged 8 years this month, let us tell you we understand the struggle of holding out for your perfect wedding, but really, a relationship is about the smaller details, the day-to-day. We’re ‘big wedding’ people, that’s what we’re holding out for, mainly because that will likely be the only time in our lives that both our families are all in one place together, but our relationship day-to-day doesn’t change from not being married, the wedding will be a big public celebration of all those little day-to-day things that make our relationship what it is. So spend today appreciating all those little details ❤️

So much to unpack here!

Adrien and I realise we are very lucky to be in a position where we get to work together, however, what this also means is that as a couple we have both been out of work in a meaningful way for the best part of a year. The wedding sector is built on a huge network of micro-businesses, sole traders and freelancers, many of the businesses don’t have the huge financial reserves needed to keep their businesses afloat indefinitely.

At 8pm, there’s going to be a Twitter bomb (that’s the first time I’ve heard that expression too!) where we try and raise the profile of weddings and the campaign. Join us on Twitter where we will be tweeting as well as our own MPs to get the hashtag trending again.

With a clear road map, businesses and business owners can make much more informed decisions about how to handle their futures - e.g. taking on a second job while the industry is closed, knowing they could return to run their business on x date. With a clear roadmap, couples can plan with confidence. With a clear roadmap, insurance companies can start offering wedding insurance again.

Make sure you check out the main post on the Instagram for full instructions of how you can get involved!

🌍16.01.21🌍

Today we are standing with all other members of the wedding community and ask you all to share this image and stand with us.

This campaign is not only for wedding creatives, suppliers and employees, it’s not only for engaged couples planning their weddings and their families, it’s a stand for culture and tradition, to recognise the importance of the institution of marriage as part of our national identity.

The wedding sector is unique in its structure, consisting of thousands of independent businesses run by tenacious and passionate entrepreneurs following their dreams. It is an industry founded in happiness and in creating moments which transcend people’s lives and form part of their family history. We are about celebrating unity, so we ask you to unite with us in turning instagram pink while we ask for a clear roadmap to reopening.

We recognise that, right now, it’s right for weddings to be off the table, however, last year we experienced huge disparity vs other businesses within the hospitality sector, especially pubs and restaurants. We want to be on a level playing field with other hospitality businesses when the time is right to do so.

We encourage you all to share this image in solidarity with all those affected by the closure of this sector.

It’s that little souvenir, of a terrible year...

This morning I woke up feeling a little despondent. Sadly we find ourselves entering 2021 still without a roadmap or a particularly firm grasp on what the future holds for weddings. I think about all those couples whose weddings still hang in the balance, all my wedding supplier peers who are getting by on faith and optimism alone, about how the country as a whole may fair in the long run.

However, looking back over this year has actually sparked a little joy and hope in me again. Seeing what is possible in a year defined by a global pandemic, lockdowns, tier systems, brexit, seismic changes in racism awareness and presidential elections, I feel hugely optimistic about what can happen once this virus is behind us, and it does feel like those days could be just beyond the horizon now.

As we enter 2021, we want to thank all those who have supported us through this year, whether you have used our services, engaged with our posts, listened to our podcast, or even just had us in your thoughts. It has all be hugely appreciated.

We’d like to wish you and your families a very happy and healthy new year, and hope you can all find reasons to be optimistic about the days to come. Remember, we are yet to live some of the happiest days of our lives, now isn’t that something to cling onto?

Some of the best people we have met and worked with this year:

Into the woods...

It lifts our spirits even more than it normally would to receive photos of our brides wedding days this year. It’s a real testament to the importance of declaring your love and making your union official in the face of everything 2020 has throw at us and the compromises and restrictions weddings especially are under.

Here are some beautiful shots from Jen’s enchanting woodland wedding in Dorset. Another bride who should have been married in the early spring, but managed to postpone and get her wedding in before lockdown part ii. Keep your eyes peeled for the amazing evening sparkler shot coming up!

Thanks Jen and many many congratulations 🥳

Love is not cancelled...

We were delighted to receive some beautiful photos from ‘s wedding in Somerset.

Many of you will have seen Danielle’s beautiful poem shared on Instagram and Facebook, a poignant comment on all those brides and grooms who had to postpone, compromise and deal with unprecedented uncertainty in the lead up to their weddings. Swipe to read Danielle’s poem!

Well, here we go again guys.

It seemed unfathomable, it seemed inevitable. We are currently collecting our thoughts and formulating a plan.

All Appointments booked up till Wednesday will be honoured unless we hear otherwise. We will be opening Monday to Wednesday next week. If anyone would like to collect their dress earlier, please drop us a line and we will do our best to finish the alterations in time. We will be in touch tomorrow with those who may need to bring fittings forward.

We’re feeling quite heartbroken, and we’re sure you all are too. We’re all in this together though, so let’s focus on those amazing weddings that are to come when covid is just a memory.
