The Warrenpoint ambush (also called the Warrenpoint massacre) was a guerrilla attack by the Provisional IRA that killed 18 British soldiers on August 27, 1979.

It took place at Narrow Water Castle outside Warrenpoint, County Down, Northern Ireland. It was the deadliest single incident for the British Army during the Troubles.

The IRA’s South Armagh Brigade carried out the attack using a “double-tap” bombing tactic designed to target both the initial target and the subsequent first responders.

The First Blast (4:40 PM): An 800-pound remote-controlled fertiliser bomb, hidden among straw bales on a parked flatbed trailer, detonated as a three-vehicle military convoy from the Parachute Regiment drove past. The explosion flipped the final four-ton lorry, instantly killing six paratroopers.

The Second Blast (5:12 PM): Anticipating how the British military would respond, the IRA predicted that reinforcements would establish an incident command post at a nearby stone gate lodge. Exactly 32 minutes later, a second 800-pound bomb hidden inside the granite structure was detonated. This second blast killed 12 more soldiers (10 from the Parachute Regiment and two from the Queen’s Own Highlanders).

We went into the break 2–1 ahead, with goals from Declan McGill and Dale Allan. Bayhorse found an equaliser in the second half, and despite creating some good chances to go on and win it, we just couldn’t make them count.

Remembering the victims of the 1988 Ballygawley bus bombing.

In the early hours of 20 August 1988, an unmarked coach carrying 36 off-duty soldiers of the 1st Light Infantry Regiment was targeted. The troops were returning to their base near Omagh after short leave.

The IRA remotely detonated a 200-pound (91 kg) Semtex roadside bomb hidden in a parked vehicle as the bus drove past the townland of Curr. The explosion blew the bus 30 metres down the road, creating a six-foot crater.

Eight soldiers, all aged between 18 and 21, were killed instantly. Another 28 soldiers were injured physically and psychologically. Passing members of a local flute band provided crucial initial first aid.

The incident was the second-deadliest attack on the British Army in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

One of loyalism’s most famous muraling icons is Eddie The Trooper. This one is in the Waterside’s Ebrington Terrace, Londonderry.

The first part of the words above the board come from the last paragraph of this WWI order: “There must be no retirement. With our backs to the wall and believing in the justice of our cause each one of us must fight on to the end”.
