Key things to remember when choosing a sample wedding dress...
1.Some alterations are simple, others are not.
It can be tempting to purchase a dress in the wrong size when you’re getting a bargain, but remember that although taking in a dress is usually straightforward within a couple of dress sizes, letting it out is much trickier, especially if there isn’t enough seam allowance. Also if the dress is much too big, please consider how different it may look when resized, clamping the back isn’t always a good indication.
2.Cleaning a wedding dress can be costly.
Many sample dresses have been tried on multiple times and may have makeup stains, dust, or discolouration. Professional cleaning is often necessary and can add to your overall budget. It’s not pleasant for your bridal seamstress working on a dirty dress, please do arrange cleaning before your fittings, or ask your seamstress if they can arrange this for you in advance
3.Damage isn’t always easy to fix.
Small snags or loose beads can usually be repaired, but larger issues—like torn tulle, missing appliqués, or fabric wear—might be difficult or expensive to restore. Ask the store if you’re worried about the extent of the damage. Consider contacting a seamstress to check the damage before committing if in doubt.
4.Structure matters.
If the dress has been on a hanger for a long time or if it’s been tried on a lot, boning and bodice structure may be weakened or warped. Most structural elements can be repaired, reinforced, or replaced, but you need to allow extra expense for this.
5.Budget for alterations.
Even if you get a sample dress at a discount, alterations are likely to be even more necessary to ensure a perfect fit, and it’s easy to think that because the dress cost less the alterations will do to, but often this is the reverse. You can expect to need to set aside at least £375 for even the most basic alterations on any wedding dress.
A sample dress can be a great way to get a beautiful gown at a lower price, but knowing what to look for can help you avoid unexpected costs and stress. If you’re unsure, I’m happy to guide you through the process before you buy!
