Many years ago I studied Stagecraft, Design & Lighting, I still adore the theatre, interiors and learning how people wish to live in their homes.

Subsequently I learnt my trade as a soft furnisher and am still learning new techniques every time I repair- you can never know it all!
To be able to use so many of the skills I’ve gained through the years in order to oversee the upkeep and new visions of this beautiful house is my dream job 😊
Every day is different, magical and special working for these beautiful people among portraits of their ancestors and now the house has been featured in a new book, English Country House Style by Milo & Katy Campbell. If you wish to learn something of the classic layering techniques and the heritage designs that can be found our English Country Houses then pop it on your chrome list, it really is a delight !
We’re putting the finishing touches to the Inner Hall of the house before decorating the house for Christmas 🫶🎄

I welcomed 5 lovely ladies on to my Roman Blind making course this weekend, one returning student, 3 new ones and long time friend Debs who’s sewing skills I am in awe of! I couldn’t imagine there was anything I could possibly teach Deb, she makes stunning Town Crier outfits 🌟 Happily she learnt lots of tricks and tips of the trade to make her Roman blinds look precision perfect and we had big hugs too 🥰

It’s always inspiring to work in this space surrounded by the amazing quilts made by the ladies who run the fabric shop, I wish I had the time to learn this gorgeous art 🤩😍🪡🧵🏡

The lovely Laura Anderton popped in to say hi with a hug, later followed by a hot chocolate hugs and supper with Sophie Poole-Strode.

Visible mending Boro style, the Japanese method of reworking and repairing textiles through piecing, patching and stitching. No sashiko stitching as it it would jar on the plain twill so the patches are secured with small ladder stitches on to the firmer areas.
Extending the life of clothes already in existence is perhaps the biggest action we can all take towards sustainability. Once just a regular domestic activity, the act of mending with pieces and patched fabrics is growing in popularity again thanks to the slow fashion movement. It’s a visible and rebellious protest we could all pursue in the fight against toxic fast fashion pollution.
And you get to keep your favourite clothes 🫶🙌

Gorgeously sunny Weekend in London for an art exhibition and a wander all the way down the Portobello Road to explore

Considering the feast of natural fabrics to choose from I was remarkably restrained and concentrated instead on selecting stock fabric samples for a new client.
We are gently restoring an old West Dorset house in a sympathetic, slightly disheveled style as is fitting to the slightly lifting interior lime washed walls, deep window seats, stripped elm floorboards and uneven stone floors. The owner has a collection of vintage textiles ready to be reworked into her light, airy house and we now have a beautiful collection of lightweight linens to choose from for our linings, valances and feather window seat cushions. Personally I adore the cotton candy stripes but we shall see…..

I don’t carry mainstream fabric books or roll stock as I offer clients bespoke made to measure services. If you’d like Softies made up in any of the stunning linens available from please message me for a personal appointment to see the large collection of beautiful samples I now have. The weights are varied with subtle light to medium weight linens and cottons suitable for lining both Romans and Curtains and a medium/ heavy weight range of striped and plain linens suited to cushions, light upholstery, Roman Blinds and Curtains.
The colours are stunning.
Particularly the washed linens that have been selectively dyed to order.

Triple mitre borders, plump interlining and weighted corners set off this gorgeous vintage chintz from a clients designer stash.
My biggest passion as a sustainable business is to use fabric that my customers already have packed away somewhere or have acquired from salvage and retro fabric retailers. There are some stunning old fabrics about and many are of far higher quality than todays modern fabrics. The thread counts are higher and spun more evenly making the woven fabrics more durable and the patterns are printed with far more care of placement than many of todays mass produced and cheap designs. Pattern matching on older fabrics (this Summerhaze from 1992) is much easier and far more reliable because the structure is tighter and more stable so fibres don’t shift around when you’re sewing.
I’ve been a curtain maker for over 25 years and building the curtains for this clients cottage was a blast from the past using all the time honoured skills and stitches of a handcrafter.
