The origin of the word fairy is found within the mists of early history starting with Ancient Latin. The Fatum or Fates were a group of goddesses who inspired & governed the affairs of mankind. Another species of spirits were the femaleFatuae & the male Fatui, immortals who dwelt in hidden places near lakes, woods & waterfalls. Eventually all these spirits became collectively known as the Fata.

The Celts struggled with the strict Latin language & in time the ‘t’ of Fata was dropped & became Fa’a, Fa’ae, Fee & Fay. Eventually Fae stopped meaning a specific group of spirits & became a description for anything otherworldly & mysterious. By the time we had the word Faery it simply meant enchanted.
