After 4 years as captain of the Jolly Floppers skittles team here in Somerset (a “Flopper” is all 9 pins down with one ball by the way) we have finally won the Summer League! We needed 7 points and got 8 ½! We are ecstatic 😊

David Queensberry, who died last week at the age of 96 was one of the most important people in my life.

He took me on as a student in the Ceramic department at the RCA in 1973.

He employed me as a Designer at Queensberry Hunt shortly after I graduated and I became a partner in Queensberry Hunt Levien in the 1980s.

He was supportive, kind, generous, amusing and very creative.
I follow in his footsteps and am so grateful to have known him and for all that I learnt from him.

It’s that time of the year again when we start getting interestingly shaped vegetables. Sharing for your general amusement – possibly the world’s most unusually shaped Aubergine….(or is it Egg Plant)? Let’s hope it tastes as good as it looks!

I was fascinated to read that Porcelain has finally made it to the car manufacturing world! Bugatti have taken inspiration from a white vase which they commissioned from modernist designer Enzo Mari in the 1990s and created their new Mistral Blanc Éternal covered with porcelain accents such as speaker grilles and armrests.

Porcelain is my favourite form of ceramic, and although most porcelain tableware is robust, practical and for restaurants I can understand that is also has a “high end” cache. Having said that, I am struggling to think of a material less appropriate than porcelain for use in motor cars!

I am fascinated by our relationship with nature. The problem is, we don’t accept that we are part of nature. Occasionally something captures this situation in a fresh way.

At the weekend, I was digging up some Ratte Potatoes and came across this one which feels to me like a metaphor for our relationship with nature.

The interpretation is up to you, but for me the metal staple is severely limiting the future of the potato. Having said that the staple has saved the potato from being eaten!

If you think this is hot, spare a thought for the guys who have to go into sanitary ware kilns and separate the pieces that have fallen during their journey through the tunnel kiln. It gets up to 1200 degrees in there, they will enjoy coming out and cooling down to 30 degrees!

I gave our Union Graduate Lathe to my friend Roe, who I knew would make good use of it.

I met Piers from the Blue Ball pub in Bruton a few weeks back and learned that he planned to enter a Skittles Team for the winter series. An idea popped into my head!

I asked Roe if he would turn a skittle ball and paint it blue. He exceeded my expectations by combining Ash and Oak and staining rather than painting.

I presented it to Piers the other night. He has displayed it in the window and told me it represents all that is good.
I look forward to playing the Blue Ballers in a few month’s time.

After 35 years of bumping up and down our farm track we have decided to put concrete down.
Big excitement on Tuesday when the first delivery arrived. But our hearts dropped rather quickly when the mixer started to pour black concrete. The square tile is what we wanted, so the driver was sent away with a flea in his ear. All going to plan now, albeit marooned!

So the Canada Geese story continues. There were 2 surviving chicks from the four last Monday. Now just one, wandering around by itself with the parents nowhere to be seen! I managed to catch this one and reunite it with its parents who were enjoying a child-free swim on our big pond. It’s not every day I can be a wildlife hero!

This jelly mould tea set was my major project when I graduated from the Central school in 1973. It was an important stepping stone on my journey into design for production. Looking back, I reflect that I was wanting to stand out then, showing off really!
Most of our work now is for hotels and restaurants where we are designing for the chefs to show off.
