💬 Questions We’re Asked All The Time

“Is a home eye examination NHS funded?”

For many people, yes! 💙

If you’re eligible for an NHS-funded eye examination and you’re unable to leave home unaccompanied because of physical or mental illness or disability, you may also be eligible to have your eye examination at home, funded by the NHS.

This can include people who are:
🏡 Housebound due to illness or disability
♿ Unable to get to an optician without significant assistance
🧠 Living with dementia or another condition that makes attending a practice difficult
👁️ Already eligible for NHS-funded sight tests

Not sure whether you or someone you care for qualifies? You don’t need to work it out yourself.

📞 Give us a call on 01543 703713 and we’ll be happy to check your eligibility and talk you through how a home visit works.

MYTH BUSTING MONDAY

❌ "You have to wait until a cataract is 'ripe' before it can be removed."

✅ This is one of the most common myths we hear.

Years ago, cataracts were often left until they became very advanced before surgery was considered. Modern cataract surgery is very different.

Today, cataract surgery is usually offered when your vision is having a noticeable impact on your daily activities. This might include difficulties with reading, watching television, recognising faces, managing hobbies, or feeling less confident getting around.

In fact, waiting too long can sometimes make cataracts harder to remove and may mean living with reduced vision unnecessarily.

Every person is different, so the decision to proceed with surgery is based on how much the cataract is affecting your quality of life rather than whether it is "ripe."

🏡 During our home eye examinations, we can assess your vision, discuss any concerns about cataracts, and advise whether a referral may be appropriate.

👀 Why contrast matters more than you might think
When our eyesight is good, we often don’t notice how much we rely on contrast to identify objects and understand our surroundings.
But for someone with reduced vision, two things that are similar in colour can seem to blend into one another.
A few simple examples:
🍽️ A white plate on a white table can make it harder to see where the plate begins and ends — and even some foods may be difficult to see against the plate.
🪜 A step that is the same colour as the flooring can be much harder to notice, increasing the risk of trips and falls.
🚿 A pale grab rail against a pale bathroom wall may be difficult to locate when it's needed.
🚪 Doors and door handles that blend into their surroundings can be harder to identify.
🪑 Furniture that is a similar colour to the floor or walls may be easier to bump into.
The good news is that improving contrast doesn't necessarily mean redecorating the whole house.
💙 Choosing a plate that contrasts with the food or table
💙 Adding contrasting tape to the edge of steps
💙 Choosing grab rails that stand out against the wall
💙 Using contrasting placemats underneath plates
💙 Making important everyday objects easier to spot against their background
Small changes like these can make everyday tasks easier, safer and less frustrating, particularly for someone living with sight loss or reduced contrast sensitivity.
As part of my home eye examinations, I can offer practical advice based on the person's vision and their own home environment. Sometimes being able to see where someone is struggling, in the place where they actually live, means I can suggest simple changes that might make everyday life a little easier.
Next time you visit an older relative or someone with reduced vision, have a look around their home.
Do important things stand out — or are they blending into the background? ❤️

💬 Questions We’re Asked All The Time

“Can you test someone in bed?”

Yes, absolutely! 💙

Not everyone who needs an eye examination is able to sit in a conventional chair — and that shouldn’t prevent them from accessing eye care.

I regularly visit patients who are bedbound or who need to remain in a specialist chair. I can adapt the eye examination to suit the individual, their mobility and their ability to take part.

🏡 The examination takes place where the patient is most comfortable
👓 The test can be adapted to their individual needs
💙 There’s no pressure to move into a particular position
😊 Family members and carers are welcome to stay and support them

Every patient is different, so every home eye examination can be different too.

If you’re caring for someone and wondering whether an eye examination would be possible, please get in touch. I’m always happy to talk through their individual circumstances before arranging a visit.

MYTH BUSTING MONDAY

❌ "Falls and balance problems have nothing to do with your eyesight."

✅ Your eyesight plays a much bigger role than many people realise.

Our eyes constantly provide information about our surroundings, helping us judge distances, spot hazards, navigate steps and maintain our balance. When vision changes, everyday tasks can become more challenging and the risk of falls can increase.

Poor vision can make it harder to:
🚶 Judge steps and kerbs
🚪 Navigate unfamiliar environments
📦 Spot trip hazards around the home
🌙 Move around safely in low light
⚖️ Maintain confidence when walking
For older adults, falls can have a significant impact on independence and wellbeing, which is why regular eye examinations are so important.
🏡 Our home eye examinations help identify changes in vision and ensure prescriptions are up to date, helping patients stay safe, confident and independent in their own homes.

💡 The importance of good lighting as we get older

Did you know that as we age, our eyes need significantly more light to see the same level of detail?

By around the age of 60–70, we may need roughly 2–3 times more light than a younger adult to see comfortably — and that need can increase further into our 70s and 80s.

So a room that looks perfectly bright to you might feel surprisingly dim to an older relative.

Poor lighting can make everyday things more difficult, including:
📖 Reading letters, books and medication labels
🍽️ Seeing food clearly at mealtimes
🪜 Spotting steps and changes in floor level
👓 Finding everyday belongings
🧩 Enjoying hobbies and activities
🏡 Moving around the home confidently

The good news is that a few simple changes can make a real difference.
💡 Add a good reading or task lamp where it's needed
☀️ Make the most of natural daylight during the day
🪟 Keep windows clear and curtains fully open
✨ Use brighter, even lighting to reduce dark corners
🚶 Pay particular attention to stairs, hallways and entrances
🌙 Use night lights to make getting around after dark easier

And remember — brighter doesn't always mean better. Glare can also make vision more difficult, particularly for someone with cataracts or certain eye conditions. The aim is plenty of comfortable, well-positioned, even light.

As part of my home visits, I can also offer practical advice on lighting around the home, tailored to the person's individual vision and the tasks they are struggling with.

I also carry reading and task lamps, so patients can try suitable lighting in their own home and see the difference the right light can make.

Next time you visit an older relative, take a look around their home through their eyes.

Is there enough light for them — or just enough light for you? ❤️
