Khaki Devil

Khaki Devil Devilishly good historical military services for film, television and theatre. Research underpins all the work that we do.

Khaki Devil provide services for Film, Television, Theatre and Community Theatre, Museums, Schools, Collectors, Living Historians and Re-enactors. We can provide Uniforms (not just military!), Equipment, Weapons, Props, Locations, Historical Advice, and much more. Ensuring that uniforms have the correct insignia for specific occasions often requires a great deal of time and skill. Having over 60 y

ears combined knowledge of military history, and a vast resource to draw on, Khaki Devil are ideally placed to provide family military research for family historians and genealogists. Although much information is now available online, interpreting military terminology in documents can be extremely difficult. All military history research undertaken by Khaki Devil is fully interpreted for ease of understanding, and to help piece together your family history. Whether you need to hire First World War uniforms, obscure military props, or find a trench system, complete with No Man's Land, for filming, you need to contact Khaki Devil.

We were very pleased to be asked to provide the First World War uniforms for the new Channel 4 adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s ‘A Woman of Substance’.

As you might imagine, a great deal of work goes into preparing the uniforms before they are sent to the studio for the fittings.

Lyndsay and Taff travelled up to Leeds to make sure that everything was adjusted for the best possible fit.

We provided a number of ‘Hospital Blue’ uniforms for convalescent soldiers, including a number of amputees.

The distinctive blue uniforms are quite a contrast to the drab khaki.

We have no control over which takes the Director decides to use, and mistakes can slip through the net, but we do our best to make sure that we get everything set up to give the Costume Department the best possible chance of success on shoot days.
🙂👍🏻

🎭 Happy International Theatre Day! 🎭

We’ve been incredibly lucky over the years to collaborate with so many amazing productions, from professional stages to passionate amateur performances. Each one has brought its own magic, creativity, and unforgettable moments.

Today, we’re celebrating the power of theatre and the wonderful people behind it by sharing just a few of the productions we’ve had the pleasure to support over the years.

So, Mrs Hall has discovered the Military Cross that Tristan has been keeping quiet…

We were very pleased to provide it for the latest series of ‘All Creatures Great And Small’.

The annual festive tradition is upon us… the sharing of the most amazing Christmas song ever made (probably).

Following all the Christmas Truce duff history currently doing the rounds, here is our annual reminder that Rock Legend, Brian Pern, and his super group Thotch, told the true story of Christmas 1914 in their No.1 best-seller - “I Wish I Was at Home With My Missus”

We were all very, very sorry to hear that Timothy West has died.

Tim was a true gentleman, and an absolute pleasure to work with.

Here he is channelling Arnold Ridley as Charles Godfrey during the rehearsals for the Dad’s Army Lost Episodes in 2019.

35 years ago the fourth incarnation of Blackadder arrived on our screens.

Over the years we have lost count of the number of theatre productions we have supplied with uniforms for the show!

We were delighted to be able to help sculptor, John Everiss, with uniforms, equipment and weapons for the two models who were scanned for the new Accrington Pals statue, which was unveiled yesterday.

We made sure that we sent exactly the right kit for two fellas of the 11th (Service) Battalion, the East Lancashire Regiment on the Somme during the Summer of 1916.

Following a discussion about the sizes of average soldiers at the time, John had cast two chaps of the right size to wear the kit as it was scanned. As usual we sent detailed fitting instructions to make sure that everything was worn correctly.

The scanning and modelling photos are copyright of John Everiss Design. The photos of the unveiling and the finished statue in situ are copyright Andrew Mackay. Thank you to them both.

It is always a pleasure to work with a sculptor, or an artist, who is keen to get the details right and make their work as historically accurate as possible. Needless to say, this was right up our street!

Khaki Devil are particularly pleased to have been able to help Opera on the Avalon by providing a Newfoundland soldier’s uniform and equipment for this short film about the Newfoundland Regiment on the Somme in 1916. The film’s launch yesterday, on Canada Day, was particularly important as it marks the 75th anniversary of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Confederation with Canada in 1949.

Yesterday was also poignant as it was the day that Newfoundland entombed their own Unknown Warrior at the National War Memorial in St John’s.
