How much pattern is too much?

In this case… it seems there’s no such thing. 🤍

I’m completely in love with this room from Hunters Glen Residence, designed by Emily Summers Design Assoc.

My Laibik Small Print in Storm has been used across the walls, curtains and sofa, wrapping almost the entire room in one pattern — and yet the result feels wonderfully calm.

It’s such a beautiful example of how a small-scale print can almost become a neutral when used en masse, creating texture and rhythm rather than overwhelming a space.

Seeing one of my designs used with such confidence is incredibly special. 💙🤍

Sometimes the best walls aren’t wallpapered at all…

I’m not a wall artist as such — my world is fabric and wallpaper — but for this room I wanted something completely bespoke and handmade. So I created my own floral stencil and used it to print the pattern directly onto the wall.

I used Farrow & Ball India Yellow, softened with a little white, with Radicchio No. 96 for the floral detail — colours that worked beautifully with the fabrics and trims I’d chosen for the room.

You can see some of the original fabric samples from the room here on my studio table, together with the beautiful trim from Camilla Hampton.

So it was especially lovely to see this image featured in the September issue of Period Living, as part of their piece on wall stencilling. Thank you to Holly Reaney and the Period Living team for including it. 💛

Playing with colour… and I need your help. 🌸

I’ve been experimenting with some new colourways for our Lulu fabric, and before deciding which ones make it into the collection, I’d love to know which you would actually choose.

Each Lulu colourway has been created to sit beautifully alongside our Zola Stripe, giving you an easy way to mix floral and stripe within the same scheme. And they also work with the corresponding Indian Summer colourways — perfect for layering patterns.

One of the biggest misconceptions in interior design is that decorating a room in just one colour will make it feel flat or uninspiring.

I think the opposite can be true.

The secret isn’t always adding lots of different colours. It’s layering many shades of one colour. Powder blue, duck egg, soft teal, faded denim and deep indigo each have their own personality. Together they create rooms that feel calm and full of depth.

Mixing patterns helps too. Florals with geometrics. Delicate prints with bolder designs. Wallpaper with fabric. It really can work beautifully together…

That’s one of my favourite ways to design a space especially if you love one particular colour and can never have enough of it

Some interiors never ask for attention… yet they’re the ones you remember.

Perhaps it’s the softened colours, the timeworn wood, or the way floral fabrics and wallpaper quietly belong together.

I’ve always believed the most beautiful rooms aren’t built around trends. They’re collected over time, layered with pieces that feel as though they’ve always been there.

Whether it’s a lampshade, a cushion, a length of fabric or wallpaper on the walls, every layer adds another chapter to the story.

If you’re planning a room, I’d always recommend starting with samples. Seeing the colours and textures in your own light changes everything—and often leads you in a direction you hadn’t expected.

Back in the studio… but not quite.

Do you ever feel as though your body has arrived home before your mind has?

A few days ago I was wandering the streets of Cairo, surrounded by colour, noise, ancient architecture and a constant stream of life. Today I’m back in the quiet of my studio, working on bespoke client schemes, tackling a mountain of sample orders, and slipping back into familiar routines.

Yet part of me is still there.

It’s a strange feeling—almost like waking from a vivid dream. You’re here, but not entirely. Somewhere between two worlds while your mind slowly catches up with where your body already is.

Perhaps it’s because we travel so quickly now. In just four hours, I was transported from the beautiful chaos of Cairo to the silence of my studio. There used to be long journeys by ship or train that gave people time to absorb where they’d been and prepare for where they were going. Maybe that journey was part of the experience.

For now, I’m letting Cairo settle. I’m discovering that inspiration doesn’t always arrive while you’re away—sometimes it quietly unfolds once you’re home.

And in between colour-matching fabrics, planning bespoke schemes and packing samples, I have a feeling, some of what I saw there, will soon begin finding its way into my work.

Sunday has always been my favourite day to stay in bed just a little longer...
Coffee balanced on the bedside table, a good book, no rush.

It’s one of those small rituals that reminds me home isn’t just about how it looks—it’s about how it makes you feel.

Looking back through these bedrooms I’ve designed over the years, I realised each one tells a slightly different story. Some are calm and understated, others colourful and full of character. Yet I’d happily spend a lazy Sunday morning in every single one.

Which bedroom would you choose for your perfect Sunday lie-in 1-14? ☕📖🛏️
