I’m on shop duty in the mill today so for those of you who saw my post yesterday I can tell you I’m managing to get a little bit further with my Kyler shawl in Number 2 between customers. I can hear Fish, one of our gill boxes (pin drafter) whirring away in the background as Jonny samples shade blends. Volti, our 2 for 1 twister (for plying the yarn) is patiently waiting for the shop doors to shut when he can jump back to work.

As we can now safely say that the heatwave and sunny days have given way to autumn I start to think about keeping warm. Log sawing and splitting are high on the list of priorities but obviously knitting is well up there. A nice little project completed recently is the Jelka hat designed by Isabell Kraemer for which I used our undyed Number 3 in Wren with Peppercorn contrast. Then on to thoughts of a slightly larger project, coincidentally also by Isabell Kraemer - her patterns are always so simple to follow. This is the Kyler shawl, originally designed for our now discontinued Ronas yarn but I’m using our Number 2 in colourway Koi and it’s knitting up an absolute dream although those instructions “work (increase) rows 1-8 28 more times” always fill me with a hint of trepidation. Although I have reached the second section please don’t expect to see the completed shawl too soon. Knitting has to fit around busy days at the mill and work here on the farm.

Studio colour begins before the yarn reaches the spinning frame.

We start by dyeing Merino and Corriedale tops into bold, saturated shades. Several colours are then combined through gilling, blending and aligning the fibres while introducing carefully balanced highlights and lowlights.

Every shade was developed through months of sampling and adjustment. Small changes altered its warmth, depth and character until each colour felt right on its own and as part of the complete palette.

The result is variation held within the yarn itself, rather than one flat colour applied after spinning.

Twelve colours, each available in Studio DK and Studio Fi*****ng. Spun at our mill in West Wales and available for ÂŁ8.50 per 50g skein.

Garthenor Studio is here 🧶

We started our mill because we wanted to make great things with wool.

Garthenor Organic gave us our foundation. For more than 25 years, it has been shaped by certified organic fibres, complete traceability and an uncompromising approach to how yarn should be made.
Studio gives us a different kind of freedom. It allows us to explore new fibres, build colours in a new way and make soft, versatile yarns at a more accessible price.

Garthenor Studio is a distinct, non-organic collection. The fibre is sourced from Responsible Wool Standard certified farms, and has been grown ethically on farms in South America completely free of mulesing.

It sits alongside Garthenor Organic, not in place of it. Organic remains exactly as it is, while Studio gives us more room to experiment, learn and enjoy what our mill can do.

Available in 12 shades in both Fi*****ng and DK weights. Pre-order now!

On Friday we attended the National Eisteddfod, which this year was taking place just outside Cardigan.

Jonny was asked to speak on a panel hosted by alongside and Raymond, former owner of Melin Teifi, all about the history and future of the local wool industry.

The event as a whole was a huge celebration of Welsh language and culture including poetry, drama, comedy, music and dancing. It was an honour to be a small part of it!

As the mornings and evenings start, at last, to be cooling down a little here in Wales we’re thinking about lightweight garments to just keep the chill off a bit. The Amory sweater designed by Isabell Kraemer using our Number 1 laceweight yarn is perfect. Lovely and light using only 200g - 250g.

Today we’re introducing something we’ve been working towards for a long time.

Melin Cardi is our new contract spinning business, created to provide yarn development and manufacturing services from our mill in West Wales.

Working with brands, farms and fibre businesses, Melin Cardi offers a route from fibre to finished yarn, backed by the same technical knowledge and manufacturing expertise that underpins Garthenor Organic.

Garthenor Organic isn’t changing. We’ll continue making the yarns you know us for. Melin Cardi simply gives our manufacturing work its own home.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your fibre, flock or yarn idea could become a commercial reality, we’d love to hear from you.

Busy hands in the mill.

A lot of preparation goes into getting the fibre ready for the spinning. Here you can see a mixture or Polwarth, Romney and Hebridean coming off the gill box for the final time.

All the wool that comes in to our mill has a use. Whether it’s our re-purposed yarn Fallow or waste fibre from sorting fleeces, it all has a use either in the mill or on the farm.

It’s always lovely to see our friends from Rowan Tree Travel. They have been bringing their American tour groups to visit us since we were based on the farm. Next job for us is pack up everything to bring to our most local show Wonderwool Wales.
